Live with Purpose: Wisdom from Ecclesiastes for Every Generation

DATE POSTED
Friday, July 11, 2025, and I was blessed to be at Blue Tree Resort at Lake Buena Vista, FL when God inspired me to prepare this devotional. My Footnote will tell you how to find and read any and all episodes that I have shared over the years.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Read Ecclesiastes 11:8-10 in your Bible or click on it to read it online in the Living Bible (TLB).

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
I hope you’ve taken a moment to read the verses referenced above, as they’ll help you better grasp the context of this devotional.
I appreciate the reminder in today’s Scripture, as it encourages us to reflect on more than just the present moment. Imagine a contractor building a house without a vision of the completed design agreed upon with the architect and owners, or boats all looking the same because the builder lacked direction. Similarly, Christianity loses its purpose if we live by our own feelings instead of using God’s Word as our guide to follow His perfect plan for our lives.

Solomon offers wisdom on this to all generations:

For older adults: Rejoice in every new day, as it brings fresh opportunities to start over or make things right. Each day is unique, but through your experiences, you’ve seen enough to know that God is in control. Without Him, facing life’s challenges and resisting the pull of evil would be impossible. Keep your focus on God’s promises for the future, which offer hope and assurance that what lies ahead is far greater than anything you face here on earth. We have a Savior who paved the way for us to one day be with Him in glory, free from evil’s influence, worshiping and adoring Him for eternity. It truly doesn’t get any better than that!

For the younger generation: It might feel like someone’s finally on your side! Solomon encourages you to enjoy life and do what you desire, something that might not line up with what your parents often tell you! However, don’t miss the important reminder Solomon gives: God holds you accountable for everything you do. While you might hide your actions from your parents, God sees all and will address it with you in His time. If you live by God’s Word daily, knowing He’s watching and holding you accountable, would you still try to get away with things? Probably not, as today’s message in verse 9 reminds us.

To sum it up, one of my favorite commentators wrote in his book: “Maximize your life while you can because you can’t go back and do it over. Today is the tomorrow you were looking for yesterday. But remember: For all of these things God will bring you to judgment (11:9). You and God are going to talk about your choices one day, so live with the end in view.” Seek the Lord while He may be found, and live according to His Word, for tomorrow you might be standing before Him, giving an account for your actions today!

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I am so grateful for the incredible gift of salvation and for each new day that my friends and I are blessed to experience—a fresh start to write a new chapter of our lives. Some days are filled with joy, happiness, and success, while others come with their challenges. Each day tells a story of how we interact with those we meet—some walking in victory through salvation, while others live without hope, unaware of the Savior who gave His life for them. We create a unique story every day. When You were young and was found teaching in the temple, You explained Your desire and duty to be about Your Father’s business. I pray that as Your followers, we too will focus on our Father’s work, sharing our experiences with You and celebrating Your goodness in countless ways. The end is near! Help us live each day with the joy of knowing what lies ahead when we meet the Father, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. Heaven is my home because Jesus is my Savior! Thank You, Jesus! AMEN!
