OBSERVATION

2 Kings 17:13 (NLT)

13 Again and again the Lord had sent his prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah: “Turn from all your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees—the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that I gave you through my servants the prophets.”

2 Kings 17:18 (NLT)

18 Because the Lord was very angry with Israel, he swept them away from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained in the land.

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

It was interesting, but yet frightening to see the consequences that occurred in Israel because of their sin, disobedience and straying away from what the Lord had ordered them to do through their ancestors. Frightening because I can see where today we are in the same boat. So much has been attributed to progress, modernization, personal achievement and satisfaction, etc. that we have pushed aside God’s commands and his teachings. I don’t know about anyone else, but O would never want to know that I was swept away from God’s presence, nor my family, or church family or city or state or country. I can’t imagine, and wouldn’t want to imagine life without the touch of the Master, without His presence, without His wisdom, without His guidance. Who am I to think that I could ever make it in this life with my Savior? Rich and powerful though we may be, our country is built on Christian principles and it is lifted up every hour by Christian prayer warriors; we are nothing without the touch and power of God on our lives each and every moment. “I Need Thee Every Hour” is a popular old hymn and never grows old and always applies.

PRAYER
(With God’s help, what am I going to do differently today because He said it?)

Father, so much is said in Your Word about the consequences of our disobedience to You and Your book of instructions. Please continue to prompt me when I stray. Please guide me in the path of righteousness. Please grant me the boldness to follow Your will in every step I take, especially at times when I find myself in the path of opposition. You are my Rock, and I need You every hour, dear God. May I never feel like You have swept me away from Your presence. I never want to witness life in Your absence. Please be my guide in all things and all decisions.

Scripture: Acts 3.  

OBSERVATION

Acts 3:7-11 (NLT)

7 Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.

8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them.

9 All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God.

10 When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded!

11 They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John.

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

Last Sunday we had corporate prayer our church and again last night. Daily there are specific prayer requests that I try to lift up to God in prayer. I wonder if I came across one of the individuals today that I have been praying for and found where God did an extreme work/healing in their life, if I would be any different to the people of Israel that were worshipping when the man that was once lame, walked in leaping and praising God? I believe that far too often we whisper a prayer out of form, or because it is the right thing to do when we see someone suffering, but how often do we look at them anticipating God’s healing/miraculous touch on their lives that surpasses anything we may have prayed for? What does it really take for us to really have faith in the God we worship, adore and pray to? It is no wonder that Jesus told the people at one point in another story, “oh ye of little faith”. After all the miracles we read about in the Bible, after all the other miracles that we have heard about from friends, loved ones and other Christians, yet we pray out of form or fashion? Jesus must be so disappointed at us when we pray like defeated people. Jesus told us that “all power has been given unto you…”. When we pray in the name of the Master of this universe, the One who conquered death, the One who healed the sick and brought life back to the dead, and when we pray out of a pure heart and a right relationship with the God to whom we are praying, there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t expect God to respond like this lame beggar witnessed. He was blessed with way more than he was asking for that day.

PRAYER
(With God’s help, what am I going to do differently today because He said it?)

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for being patient with me while I build faith and confidence in the power of the God to whom I pray. There is absolutely no reason that I should doubt Your power, Your abilities and Your awesome love that causes You to respond to Your children. Yet I must know that You are not a puppet, and I must not wait until there is a need that I see clearly before coming to You demanding something. You are the potter and I am the clay. You are in control of everything around me, especially the lives of those that I love and am concerned about. In addition to the confidence gained in this passage today, I humbly ask for the wisdom that caused Peter and John to see beyond the physical needs of people and pray for the things that will give You glory and peace to the ‘beggar’.

Scripture: 2 Kings 10-13.  

OBSERVATION

2 Kings 13:1-3 (NLT)

1 Jehoahaz son of Jehu began to rule over Israel in the twenty-third year of King Joash’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria seventeen years. 2 But he did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He followed the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat, continuing the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit.

3 So the Lord was very angry with Israel, and he allowed King Hazael of Aram and his son Ben-hadad to defeat them repeatedly.

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

I underlined a sentence that really caught my attention in this passage of scripture. The thing that is so sad throughout my reading of the Old Testament is that no matter how much God blessed His people, there were still ungodly kings/rulers that allowed the people to do what they pleased and dishonor God. I believe that spiritual leaders will lead their people into spiritual matters. It would be only natural and God honoring to do this. This is when God caught my attention and helped me to be reminded of the importance of praying for God-fearing men to lead us in our cities, in our state and in our country. Ungodly men will allow ungodly things and actions, and I believe these will lead to ultimate defeat because of the displeasure of our God. Friends, I believe that God loves us way too much to see us suffer under the hands of those that are out to cheat, steal and destroy. However, God is equally as displeased with His people when we stand idly by and allow these type rulers, because of our lack of prayer, or lack of getting out to vote, or lack of support for men of God. Our country has been blessed with great military strength and we have been successful in many instances of battle. Let’s do our part to insure ongoing favor with God by voting for men of God to lead us and then supporting them with our prayers, encouragement and our actions as Christians.

PRAYER

Father, I pray that I will be blessed to see Your protective and loving arms around and over our nation all the days of my life. I pray that You will continue to remind Christians about the importance of being informed voters, so that we may always seek Your guidance for Your man to rule our nation/state/city. I pray that we will always be a country primarily made up of Christians, as I would love/desire/ask that You always protect us from repeated defeats as in the case of the Israelites.

Acts 2:37-41 (AMP)

37 Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do?

38 And Peter answered them, Repent (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.

40 And [Peter] solemnly and earnestly witnessed (testified) and admonished (exhorted) with much more continuous speaking and warned (reproved, advised, encouraged) them, saying, Be saved from this crooked (perverse, wicked, unjust) generation.

41 Therefore those who accepted and welcomed his message were baptized, and there were added that day about 3,000 souls.

APPLICATION

What shall we do? – This was the cry of the people at the end of verse 37 when they were convicted of their sin through the preaching of the Word by Peter. Even today, people attend church (many out of tradition, I believe) and they hear the Word of God. Some are not so stubborn as to hear and believe the Word, and to acknowledge that they are far from perfect. To those that truly ‘hear’ the Word of God, and become convicted of the areas that they fall short in, should immediately bow before God and ask like the folk did before Peter and the disciples, “What shall I do now”? Friends I hope that anyone reading this devotional will realize that many who are were with us yesterday are not with us today. My point here is that when we become convicted of our sin, we don’t need to procrastinate, for we have no assurance of tomorrow. We could be called out from this earth today. The answer to this critical question is very clear in the verses that I am sharing with you today, specifically verse 38. As Peter encouraged, so allow me to do. This question is way too critical to shrug off. This question is way too critical to be less than 100% sure about when evaluating your position with the Lord. On the day of Judgment when you are asked why you should be allowed into Heaven, no other answer will do if you have not followed the instructions that Peter gives in verse 38. Each of us at one point in our lives must have asked the question, “What shall I do Lord”? Our answer had to have been either:

1. “Lord, I repent of my sin. Please forgive me of my sin and make me fully acceptable in Your sight. Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit that You have promised to be my Guide, my Comforter and my Friend”, or
   
2. “Lord, I hear You speaking to me, but I just cannot commit my life to You right now, even though I realize that should I die in the meantime, I will open my eyes in Hell with Satan and his demons.”
   

PRAYER

Lord, I realize that the above appears very blunt, possibly cruel, and leaves no room for those who just want to postpone a decision to accept You as Lord, but unfortunately that’s the way that I understand Your Word. For each question we are posed with, we make a definite decision. In the case of the question posed by the Israelites, some chose to respond and accept You (some 3,000 of them), while the others chose to decline the invitation and face Satan and his demons. I pray that all who may read this devotional today will respond positively to Your voice and ready themselves for the day when You will call them home to live eternally with You. Thank You for convicting me of my sin and convincing me of the need for a Savior in my life. I look forward to the day when I will see You face to face and worship at Your feet forever and forever. I would love to unite with my family and friends at that time, so please work on their hearts today so that they may make this most important decision of their lives, while they still have breath to do so.

OBSERVATION

Acts 1:7-8 (NLT)

7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

Luke sharing in this first chapter of his book (Acts) reminds us of the events that surrounded Jesus’ time with His disciples just prior to His ascension. I found this interesting, as the disciples were just like us, we always want to know more about something. Jesus told the disciples basically that since this (the return of Jesus) is out of your control, don’t even worry about it. Instead, you (the disciples) will receive all that you need (the Holy Spirit), so take advantage of that and be about my work. I see no ways that we are any different today. Upon our conversion (acceptance of Jesus as Lord of our life), we too were empowered with the Holy Spirit. Our jobs are to be about the work of spreading the gospel both locally and abroad. We must be careful to not fall into the same trap of the disciples and get side tracked. Each of us are called to share the news about the greatest thing that has happened to us, the good news of Jesus and His love for each and every one. Let’s not hide this miracle from our friends; we want them to be a part of this life changing, eternal transformation also!

PRAYER

Father, we are often so timid when it comes to sharing our faith. However, if anything else good happens to us we can easily blast it out to the world. Please let us love our friends and neighbors enough to share the life-changing effects of accepting You as Lord, following in Your footsteps and allowing You to guide, protect and love us each and every day. By far, having You rule my life has been the most awesome event in my life. This is worth sharing this with my friends, as I want the very best for them also. Please grant me the boldness and determination to do that today!

2 Kings 5:9-14 (NLT)

9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha’s house.

10 But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of your leprosy.”

11 But Naaman became angry and stalked away. “I thought he would certainly come out to meet me!” he said. “I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me!

12 Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than any of the rivers of Israel? Why shouldn’t I wash in them and be healed?” So Naaman turned and went away in a rage.

13 But his officers tried to reason with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, ‘Go and wash and be cured!'”

14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child’s, and he was healed!

APPLICATION

This passage reminds me that God will respond in His way to my requests for help, and this will not always be in the way that I expect. I was taught as a very small child not to demand things, but rather – ask for things with gratitude. If God granted everything that we demand – including those things that we demand selfishly and without regard for how this may truly affect our lives, often we would be in deep trouble. Friend, we serve a great big God – all powerful, all knowing and without blemish, but always looking out for our very best. He created us and provides everything that we need. Let us therefore, ask in accordance with His will and His desire for our lives, knowing that through His love for us, He will provide nothing but the best for us. Let’s let Him be God and let us take our humble position at His feet with deep respect for the One that loves us so much that He was willing to sacrifice His only Son so that we could spend eternity in His presence. His response to our requests will be from a heart of love. Let us obediently follow His commands and accept the gifts of love that He lavishes on us each day.

PRAYER

Father, it is so easy for us to wind and complain, even when You are ultimately looking out for our very best. Thank You for loving me so much that You gave of Your most valuable possession. I believe that it is so important that You, the Creator, remain in charge of the created, me and my earthly cohorts. Thank You for convincing me that You will always act and respond from a heart of love, doing what You know is best for us, regardless of what we may selfishly ask for or desire. I want You to be God. Please help me to approach Your throne with that in mind.

OBSERVATION

John 21:17 (NLT)

17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep“.

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

Simon Peter was mystified why Jesus would ask him if he love Him. In fact, Peter responded like we many times do to such a question, “you know that I love you”. I believe that Jesus was saying to Peter what He would say to us today. If you really love Me, then …… In Peter’s case Jesus said, “then feed my sheep”. If He said that to many of us today, we might respond “But excuse me Lord, that’s the job of my pastor, I’m just a …..” But friend, I believe that this is exactly what God would want of us today. If we truly love Him, or if He truly has first place in our lives, then we will share that love and talk about that relationship with everyone that we come into contact with. Each of us answer this question each and every day, for we show Jesus how much we love Him by what we say about Him and how obedient we are to His commands, and how much we try to imitate Him and all that He taught us in His Word. How does it look at the end of the day when you reflect back on your actions and/or words? Do you love Jesus? Really love Him?

PRAYER

Father, this is an eye opener this morning for I take Your love for granted in so many ways. Please grant me the strength, boldness, courage and determination to reflect Your love in everything that I say or do today. May I reflect back on the day and feel satisfied that I have fed Your sheep, I have loved Your sheep, I have witnessed to Your sheep and most of all, that I have loved them with a heart like Yours.

Scripture: 2 Kings 1.  

OBSERVATION

2 Kings 1:16 (NLT)

16 And Elijah said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: Why did you send messengers to Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask whether you will recover? Is there no God in Israel to answer your question? Therefore, because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on; you will surely die.”

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

My mind was directed to cases that I have known of where families have travelled from long distances to have a TV evangelist pray over them because of what appeared to be an incurable decease from a human doctor’s perspective. While I believe that in desperation we will do almost anything to try and save a loved one, I also believe that it is evident from this passage that God wants us to be aware that He is everywhere that we are, and He is accessible by any of His children. An additional curse was placed on king Ahaziah for thinking that he could get answers from the gods at the temple of Baalzebub about the injuries he sustained in a serious fall. Friends, God is available to His children at any time, wherever we may find ourselves in need of Him. God’s Word is full of instances and verses that declare this truth. Seek the Lord while He is near. Depend on the Lord for He always hears our cry for help. Seek the Lord first and foremost, not wait until all else fails. We see from the previous chapter how the prophets called by the king quickly shared their personal views and then claimed that they were from God. Praise be to God that we can go directly to the throne and not have to worry about human intervention to fill the gap for us!

PRAYER
(With God’s help, what am I going to do differently today because He said it?)

Father, You know that my mention of this example that I have knowledge of is not intended to place guilt on the minds of anyone, but rather I believe that You have opened the doors of Heaven to me today and helped me to be reminded of the power of the almighty God that I serve, and the value that You place on each of Your children. You have also showed me that I may come directly to You with requests, concerns and needs. If I feel like I am unworthy of that privilege, then there are some other cleaning up that I need to do in my relationship with You before You would hear my prayer directly or through the requests by others on my behalf. I pray that You may speak to me each and every day so that I may maintain a clean, open relationship with You so that You may continue to work in and through me in miraculous ways to fulfill Your perfect will. Thank You for loving me this much. Thank You for saving me from the evil one. Please use me as Your instrument today to reach the heart of one that may not know You personally and/or to encourage and bless the life of someone that does.

Scripture: John 20.  

OBSERVATION

John 20:24-27 (NLT)

24 One of the disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came.

25 They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.”

26 Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.

27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!“

“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.
29 Then Jesus told him,
“You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

I believe that many of us are like Thomas. We need to see a sign or miracle to believe. The thing that really spoke to me on this is that Thomas was one of the disciples, yet he struggled with faith. When others (particularly non-Christians) look at us as an example of Christ, as a follower of Christ, as one who knows the Lord, do they see enough faith in us to make a believer of them? Thomas was struggling on his own, I can’t imagine how others who looked to him for Godly wisdom and direction would have gained more strength than what he himself was displaying. God expects us to depend on Him, His Word and all the teachings contained therein. He expects us to be full of faith, as in verse 27 He admonished us to not be faithless any longer. Let us therefore stand on the promises of God. Let us believe that He will do what He said He would do. Let our faith be so bold that others will know there is a God because they can see it and feel it in all that we are about.

PRAYER

Father, there are so many truths in Your Word that encourage us each day and give us direction for the Godly life that You should lead, especially so that those that may not know You might gain a desire to want to know you personally. To do this, I believe that it will be important to place our faith and trust solidly in You and to make every moment count, as we could never imagine when someone may be looking to us for the Godly influence, faith or direction needed to help them make a decision to also ask Jesus to guide them. May I be a man of faith, and may those that read this be people of sincere faith each and every day through the grace that only You can give.

Scripture: 1 Kings 11.  

OBSERVATION

1 Kings 11:32-35 (NLT)

32 But I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. 33 For Solomon has abandoned me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of the Ammonites. He has not followed my ways and done what is pleasing in my sight. He has not obeyed my decrees and regulations as David his father did. 34 “‘But I will not take the entire kingdom from Solomon at this time. For the sake of my servant David, the one whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees, I will keep Solomon as leader for the rest of his life. 35 But I will take the kingdom away from his son and give ten of the tribes to you….

APPLICATION
(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

I know that my God is a just God and that He expresses love in ways that are way out of the realm of what I can fathom, but as I read this passage I was amazed of how much God really loves us when we not only say with our mouths that we believe, or express our acceptance of His Son as our Savior, but His love reaches to, what seems to be, new heights when He sees us so committed to Him that we obey His commands and follow His instructions. In other words, when we put our beliefs and commitment into action, and actually follow through with what we believe. God withheld total judgment on Solomon because of His deep love and regard for Solomon’s father, David. Wow, what a love God is expressing here for this man that followed His commands while he was alive. Now before you think that this was much easier for David than it is for us today, I want to remind you that David struggled with many of the same sins that we struggle with today, and he gave into many of the same desires and/or lusts that some of us give in to today. Yes, there was evidence of failures by David, but God’s Word also shows where David quickly reconciled with God and sought forgiveness and sincerely sought His help for strength to overcome and get back on a right footing with God. Friends, as we seek God’s heart and His will we will be more apt to seek His help to overcome the weaknesses and failures that may result. God knows better than us that there is only One who is perfect, and that’s His Son Jesus, but what He is looking for from us is to have a mind like His and a desire to bounce back and get back on track in following Him, and not to wallow in our sin and go on sinning. When we are reminded of sin in our lives, we don’t use the point of us being weak as a human, instead we lean on the power of the Almighty to show us how to overcome the human weakness and instead depend on God for His strength, His power, His direction and His ultimate love to excuse us and make us right with Him. How reassuring to know that He will bless for generations because of what we do and because of our obedience. Praise be to God that He sees such value in us!

PRAYER
(With God’s help, what am I going to do differently today because He said it?)

Father, You are awesome and You constantly amaze me with Your love for me, just as You have shown me today about Your love for David, even long after he died. I need Your strength today to be more like You. I need Your strength, wisdom and direction to always return to the cross – at Your feet, and seek Your forgiveness and teaching on how I might be more like You and what I must do to follow Your commands with a perfect heart and will. Please be my constant guide today. Please give me quick reminders when I am tempted to stray or disobey Your commands. Your blessings for generations to come will be a side benefit, as my aim is to please You personally and to be more like You every day. Hearing You say “well done good and faithful servant” is my ultimate goal, but I clearly understand that I can only get there with total dependence on You. Thank You for expressing so much love to me. Please help me to express my love to You through daily obedience to You.
