An Accurate Look into our Motives and Actions

DATE POSTED: Wednesday, December 19, 2023, and I was blessed to be at The Landing at Seven Coves, Willis, TX when God inspired me to prepare this devotional. My Footnote will tell you how to find, read or listen to any and all episodes that I have shared over the years.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE FROM THE New Living Translation (NLT) IS FOUND IN Proverbs 21:2-3; 13;

THE BIBLE TEXT IS: People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.
The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.
Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

APPLICATION OF THE WORD: When trying to weigh in on our neighbors disputes they are sharing with us, we must always remember that there’s at least 3 conditions we must examine: His story; Her Story; and the Right story! Why is that? Because we all make our own decisions sound as good as we possibly can. However, we will make our spouse’s story sound as bad as possible, to help warrant why we are complaining and whining! But isn’t that the way it is when we stand before God in prayer also? Often we know the right thing we should say or do, and we probably know what the Bible wants us to say or do, so we really do know what pleases God. But why do we still choose to do what displeases our spouse, family and God? Friends, I would dare say that we are such people pleasers that we feel like we must say and do everything that will look right to those looking on, or sounds right when we tell our story. But for today, we are reminded what God said through His servant Solomon: ‘The Lord examines our heart, and our motives’. So shouldn’t we, as children of God, aim to please our Master and Lord at all times, seeing that it is He that we surrendered our lives to when we vowed to turn from this world and follow Him? Isn’t it Him that we aim to please, regardless of what the world thinks of us? In fact, we are further told in verse 3, that God is more concerned with our righteousness, honesty, and god-like attributes, than He is in the amount of time we spend at church, or the amount we give to the church and/or towards His earthly work. Notice the Scripture didn’t say that we stop giving and just act right! For the child of God, in right standing with Him, will also give, at a minimum, the percentage given as a guide in His Word. For we give from a heart of love and obedience to our God. But when we give from hearts that are not right with God, how can we possibly please Him and give according to the intent of His Word where He wants us to give freely and happily from hearts filled with God’s love and appreciation for all that He has given to us. When we do this, we will give without strings attached for what the church, or pastor, or leaders could do for us, we will give because of our love and appreciation for our God. Notice that we are also taught to help others, especially the poor. Of particular interest is that God doesn’t say that we help them only after we’ve checked out their intent to gain illegitimately from us. For God is our judge, and theirs. Friends, I was touched by the verse that reminded me that I will be treated much like how I treat others. No matter how much money we have, or don’t have, we will be treated much in the same way that we treat others. When we find excuses and apply man made logic to give, or not give to others, the same may apply to us at some stage down the road. Notice that God didn’t apply this to just those above a certain pay grade or with a minimum of ‘X’ number of dollars in the bank. If someone is begging for bread, give them half of yours. In that way, you won’t starve and nor would they! Friends, we may often wonder why our prayers are not answered. I believe that we have some great examples included in today’s Scripture that might cause us to wonder why God would help, especially if we act like He indicated in these verses today.

PRAYER BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT OF TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Lord Jesus, I am reminded that here on earth, we can fool some of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time! It’s unfortunate we fall back into our old ways more times than we care to remember, but thank You for reminding us that we absolutely can’t fool You, for You not only know our words and our deeds, but You know our very thoughts, and our motives behind why we do and say what we do. Your Word is clear on what You demand of us, and in the lessons taught to us today, we’ve been reminded that we can hide nothing from You. Lord, we want to be transparent in our actions and our intent. We know that we can hide nothing from You, now please teach us to never feel the need to hide our intentions from anyone else, and may there never be a reason why You can’t be glorified through us nor in our actions and speech. AMEN!

Some Will Enter, While Others Won’t

DATE POSTED: Monday, December 18, 2023, and I was blessed to be at The Landing at Seven Coves, Willis, TX when God inspired me to prepare this devotional. My Footnote will tell you how to find, read or listen to any and all episodes that I have shared over the years.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE FROM THE Living Bible (TLB) IS FOUND IN Hebrews 4:1-3

THE BIBLE TEXT IS: Although God’s promise still stands—his promise that all may enter his place of rest—we ought to tremble with fear because some of you may be on the verge of failing to get there after all. For this wonderful news—the message that God wants to save us—has been given to us just as it was to those who lived in the time of Moses. But it didn’t do them any good because they didn’t believe it. They didn’t mix it with faith. For only we who believe God can enter into his place of rest. He has said, “I have sworn in my anger that those who don’t believe me will never get in,” even though he has been ready and waiting for them since the world began.

APPLICATION OF THE WORD: In the New Living Translation, and several others, my attention was drawn to the way that the writer wanted us to focus on being at rest. I believe the best way for us to understand that is to think about a time in our lives when we were at ‘unrest’. I recall my mom sharing a time when she and my dad were caught in their home battling a large (tidal like) wave that came ashore in a monster hurricane. Their home was being battered, while also being filled with water. Both my mom and dad fought for their lives while seeing everything they owned being destroyed, and also while fighting for their own personal survival. At their first safe opportunity, they escaped and ran to the shelter of relatives who lived on higher, and safer, ground. Although still extremely concerned about their home and belongings, their minds were ‘at rest’ in being in a safe place, loved and cared for by relatives. In the Bible, and in these verses in particular, reference is made to the rescue of the Israelites from Egypt, where they were slaves in a foreign land. These were God’s chosen people, so when the time was right, He coordinated a safe and miraculous passage for their escape, into a land He promised to them. This ‘land’ was no ordinary place, for it was referred to as: a place of land and honey; a place that was lucious green and where its current residents seemed like giants. Although I would imagine that no one reading this devotional ever served as a slave, I believe that like me, you too can imagine the sigh of relief by the Israelites when they finally saw hope for their rescue from slavery drawing near. But, regardless of the miracles, upon miracles, that took place while millions of people made their way through the desert with minimal provisions, yet we know from the account that: some continued to wish they were back in Egypt; some cursed Moses for leading them into very rough times; many denounced the power of God, even after witnessing His miraculous actions to save them, feed them, and guide them on to a new country. In fact, some were so strongly opposed to God and His actions, that God lost His patience with them and refused to let them enter the land He had prepared for them. Interesting story, isn’t it? But is it any different to what we do today? God also prepared a place for you and I to dwell, after our time here on earth. With our permission, He wantsto take us out of our slavery to sin and this wicked world. He is performing miracles all around us, so that we could be reminded of His existence and His power. He left for us His Book of Instruction (the Bible) so that we could know more about Him, be guided in how He wants us to live, and most importantly – to introduce us to His very special gift – His only Son, Jesus. If we believe on Him and accept Him, then God promised us a land also – a forever home called Heaven. However, the same warning that He gave to the Israelites, He also gives to us. This new home, Heaven, is only available if we believe on Jesus and accept Him as Lord of our life. If we choose not to believe, then we will receive the same judgment as the Israelites – we will not enter into the land promised by God, for Heaven is a place for the saints of God to join with their Master/King/Lord where we will live eternally with him. Where does that put you, my friend. The conditions for acceptance is clear. No excuses will pardon your disobedience of the Master. God said it, we must believe it, for Him to accept us into Heaven. Leave no doubt in this my friend. This is a decision you must make while you’re alive, for your course in eternity to be just as God promised. If you choose to opt out in your decision making, your eternity will be more intense misery, pain and abuse by the evil one in hell. Please read my Footnote carefully, and follow through with the greatest decision you could make this side of Heaven. Your eternity depends on it.

PRAYER BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT OF TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Lord Jesus, I believe that You have built into us an overwhelming desire to make decisions that could mean endless happiness! Likewise, I am equally convinced that You have built into us a desire to question, and kick against the norm. A decision that, unfortunately, may lead to total destruction and/or misery, and/or eternal hopelessness. In making such important choices, it seems like our decisions would be easy. However, Satan is allowed to woo us towards his corner so we often choose to dishonor You, oh Lord. Although, I am reminded over and over again in Your Word that we are made in Your likeness, and if we would only seek You as our earthly Guide in these important decisions that affect our eternity, You will draw us to Yourself. Because of Your proven love and concern for us, Your precious children, I believe You are deeply saddened to see us set You aside, and instead accept the evil and hatred that the evil one is known for. Please forgive us Lord, and make us more determined to see and accept You and Your amazing attributes that will lead us to the joys of eternity in Heaven with You. AMEN!

Everyone Eligible For Life Eternal

DATE POSTED: Thursday, 2023-04-13
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: 1 Timothy 1:15-16
TRANSLATION: New Living Translation (NLT)

BIBLE TEXT: 15 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. 16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

OBSERVATION: Credit Card companies will advertise using words similar to my title today, for they want everyone to apply for their credit card, and they know that some will feel like they couldn’t possibly qualify. When invited to know Jesus, most individuals will respond that they are so unworthy of acceptance by the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. But God knew this would be the case, so He arranged an example in and through the life of Paul to help us understand that His grace is sufficient and reaches to every child created by Almighty God. Stay tuned to be reminded of how important you are to God!

APPLICATION: Although not referenced in today’s Scripture, Paul’s former name was Saul. When Paul makes reference to him being one of the worst sinners, he was referring to the days of Saul, when he was known as a persecutor of the church and of Christians as a whole. Today we sometimes hear of a church being burned down, or burglarized, or riddled with gunshots, but I don’t know of any crimes that could be compared to the evil done by Saul. However, God met up with Saul, convicted him of his sin, saved him, changed his name to Paul, and sent him on to do the work of the Lord instead. So, when you drum up excuses of why you can’t attend church, or why a Christian shouldn’t waste their time worry about why they couldn’t lead you to Christ because of your evil deeds, please try to remember the story of the former Saul, and the new Paul who went on to reach the unchurched and place churches where there was no presence of godly teaching. If God could deal with such a terror as Saul, could He not also challenge you on your sin? If God could start life anew in Paul, and put aside all the bad he had done, could He not turn your life around. Please try to remember from all Bible accounts that speak of God changing a man. Never does it say that God went after the worst sinners, or the one with just a little sin. A person who sins, disobeys God. There is no such thing as a minor sin or a major sin. God sent His Son, Jesus, to save mankind from their sin – period. ‘Minor’ sins may not even get the attention of the authorities today, for governments have come to accept many things that God might consider ‘sin’. But, please don’t forget that ‘sin’ occurs when one disobeys the laws of God. Authors in the Bible went to a great extent to help us understand what God established as His law for mankind. Satan first tempted Eve about how insignificant he felt the laws of God was, and of course Satan has intensified his pressure on mankind today with this misguidance to make sure that God won’t win us over. Dear friends, I am a firm believer that ‘greater is He (God) that is inside of the child of God, than he (Satan) that is in the world. You have a fairly straightforward decision to make. Are you prepared to accept Jesus, the Creator of the universe; the One sacrificed on Calvary’s hill for the redemption of our sin; the One who sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for us; the One waiting to receive us into His eternal kingdom (heaven) for all eternity? Unless you make a decision, you are doomed for eternity in the fires of hell with its leader, Satan. I feel like the decisions is obvious, but Satan may be pounding it into your head like he did with Saul, that his way is the only reasonable and fun way. Friend of God, Trust in the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and lean not on your own understanding. Today is the day of salvation. Seek the Lord while He may be found!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: It is very possible that others will see Jesus evident in us and desire to accept Him as Lord of their life also! It will be worth it all!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, please open our eyes to the truth of Your Word. Paul identified reasons why You saved him, and he glorified You for using him in spite of his past. Please develop with us a sense of why You saved us, and the purpose for which You’ve still allowed us to stick around. Each man faces a decision of where they will spend eternity. Thank You Lord for opening my blinded, sinful eyes and allowing me to see the love of Jesus. Please open the eyes of our relatives, friends and all who have yet to make a decision regarding their eternal destiny. As they are reminded of the change You made in the life of Saul, may they also be reminded that You can do the same for them, if only they will allow You to bless them and save them from eternity in Hell. AMEN!

Be Sure and Choose Wisely

DATE POSTED Friday, 2021-09-03
WRITTEN AT: Okeechobee, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Luke 12:51-53
TRANSLATION: Contemporary English Version (CEV)

BIBLE TEXT: 51 Do you think that I came to bring peace to earth? No indeed! I came to make people choose sides. 52 A family of five will be divided, with two of them against the other three. 53 Fathers and sons will turn against one another, and mothers and daughters will do the same. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will also turn against each other.

APPLICATION: When our daughter was growing up, her mom would often ask who she loved the most. Invariably, she would respond ‘both of you’! We always chuckled, but isn’t that so true in life today? Christians are called to decide on what we will do with groups and individuals who operate in total disobedience to the Word of God. More often than not, we choose to accept their beliefs, rather than standing firm on the Word given by God for us to live by. Jesus told His disciples that there was reason He had given them certain commands and guides for living, even though many of His instructions might seem totally opposite to what the world around them were doing. You might recall that some disciples were called from various occupations – tax collector; fishermen; etc, and invited to become a follower of Christ. There were many obstacles for these brothers to transition from their daily jobs to follow a man despised by the Pharisees and government leaders, so Jesus needed to do a lot of teaching and retraining. But isn’t it interesting how Jesus chose to complete this training so bluntly? It seems like today we try to pretty up the Gospel and suggest such a glorious life in accepting and serving Jesus Christ, that one might think that it is only second to working at the palace. But friends, Jesus is still calling us to choose. Will we go with the crowds; please our greedy, angry politicians; or work diligently to becoming the popular guy/girl among our peers; or will we truly accept the call to serve only our God and obey His commands that He issued for our good? We may often go a direction with Jesus that our family, friends or boss disagrees with, and we will be forced to make a decision whether we will truly follow Christ, or whether the cost is too high. Unlike us, where we stand on the fence with many choices of man, Jesus wants us to follow His example in calling a spade a spade, even if it leads us to a cross like He endured. Where do you take your stand, dear friends? Are you for God, or against Him? There’s no in-between. If His Word teaches against something, then we are called to teach/preach/witness/stand against it, even if it cost us friends, family, coworkers, job, church, etc. Are you truly on the Lord’s side?

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Heaven is promised for those who place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are willing to obey His commands, in spite of opposition and/or persecution.

PRAYER: Lord, I think of a hymn I sang as a child: ‘Who is on the Lord’s side’, never realizing that I would one day study these words of Yours to Your disciples and applying them to my life. What an eye opener today. We tend to think of You as the God of love, unity and One who creates nothing but peace and love among Your children. But as in all areas of life, we will create division when we stand firm on a point of view. Please teach us to be loyal to You in every aspect of our life and to always be obedient to Your commands, even if it causes division among those who disagree or sit on the fence of decision. I believe that You would have us love others, even through our disagreements, so please work miraculously through us as we dedicate our lives to You and live as You commanded. May all things still be done for Your ultimate glory. AMEN!

The Rest of the Story!

THE HOLY BIBLE (The Contemporary English Version – Revelation 21:3-8): 3 I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God’s home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. 4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever. 5 Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted. 6 Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. 7 All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 8 But I will tell you what will happen to cowards and to everyone who is unfaithful or dirty-minded or who murders or is sexually immoral or uses witchcraft or worships idols or tells lies. They will be thrown into that lake of fire and burning sulfur. This is the second death.

THOUGHTS: For those of you who have followed Nuggets for a while will remember that we covered from the creation of the world, to the birth of Jesus, through the miracles and life changing events that occurred during His short life, then through His death/crucifixion and resurrection. All of this happened in perfect timing, and this information has been widely available for years, to show that although we are born into a world of sin and perhaps little hope, we realize when we read the last book of the Bible that all these happenings were for a reason. They brought us hope and a promise, that if we surrender our lives to Jesus – God’s sacrificial gift to man, then we would be included in the family of God referred to in verse 3. The whole plan comes together friends! For those who wisely surrendered their lives to the lordship of Jesus Christ during their lifetime, we can look forward to having God live among us in an atmosphere of peace, comfort and tranquility – no more tears, death, suffering, crying or pain. Everything new! Everything as we know it today will be finished! Fortunately we are also warned about what will happen to those who choose to do life their own way. In verse 8 these folk are given just the opposite treatment. Friends, we know the Bible is true, for it is one of the most widely printed and studied books there is, plus its content has been proven over and over again. In the financial world, if we know of impending doom we try to avoid it by investing much more conservatively. In our physical environments, we try to protect ourselves when we are warned of hurricanes and/or other acts of God. I am very concerned for the millions of people who have chosen to accept the latter conditions mentioned in verse 8. There are choices that our family and friends can make to improve their eternal destiny. Are we praying enough, or encouraging enough, or doing enough to help them make wiser choices today Christians? The end of the story is very exciting for those who have made arrangements to be in the presence of Jesus and His Father! It can be the same for those of you reading this who are not sure of your position/destiny. Please follow the steps in my Footnote to receive help and sure up your position about heaven or hell as your destination, and God vs Satan for your eternal master. I would welcome the opportunity to help!

PRAYER: Thank You Father for providing everything for Your children. It is unfortunate, but we believe that there are still many who have chosen to ignore Your gift of eternal life and settle for the Lake of Fire referenced in our scripture this morning. Many of these are our family, friends and coworkers, and we are very concerned about their sanity in this kind of decision. I realize that Satan is busy at work, distracting his followers from the truth of which I have referenced here today, but I am blessed and assured to know that Christians are following the same Savior today as will lead us on that day referenced in verse 3 above! Oh Lord, please use Your saints to be an influence in the lives of those who do not call You Lord. Please keep us from being stumbling blocks, but to stay firm in our belief and always lift up the name of Jesus in all that we do and say. May lives be impacted for You today, is my humble plea oh Lord. All this I ask in the bountiful name of Jesus, AMEN!

One Choice Determines Your Destiny!

The Bible – New Living Translation

Psalm 102:27–28

27 But you are always the same;

you will live forever.

28 The children of your people

will live in security.

Their children’s children

will thrive in your presence.”

 Thoughts:

As our kids are growing up we try to make sure they do well in school, and we prepare financially, and mentally, for them going on to college, to help prepare them for the best jobs, and therefore the best chance of making it in this challenging world. Similarly, in life, we are born a sinner, and because of a precious gift given by God, we have a choice of remaining a sinner (without Christ), or to accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. We may then live the rest of our lives savoring in that love, and subsequently look forward to a glorious day when we might be with Jesus in glory. You might ask, “but how do I get from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ in these life decisions”. David reminds us in this Psalm that in spite of all that changes in this world, in fact all that changes in our generation compared to that of our forefathers, it is important to remember that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever. For a moment, let us look at the death of our parents. The world looks on and they either raise their hands in celebration that the children of the deceased were taught the love of God, accepted that precious gift, and therefore have the security referenced in verse 28 above, or disappointedly they may nod their heads knowing that the children have opted to live their lives without regards for the Christ that their parent knew, and therefore has no hope of tomorrow. Friends, my God is an everlasting God that I can recommend to my child(ren) and give them the assurance of life eternally with Him. How can I do this? Because, in scripture I am assured by Jesus, when He said: “Because I live ye shall live also”. You see, Jesus has prepared a home for His children! Praise God, I have the assurance like David did, that this ‘home’ Jesus referred to is not just for Christians today, but for their children also, if they make the choice to personally accept Jesus and develop a life-long relationship with Him. No choice at all will leave you on the road to eternal destruction (Hell). Making a choice to accept Jesus as Lord, can give you the same comfort and assurance that your Christian forefathers may have had, if they knew Him. Super simple folk, but super important. I hope that you will use the contact information in the footnote and allow myself or someone else who loves you, to lead you to the cross of Jesus Christ TODAY! I would love to celebrate with you!

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, just as my friends make choices that help mark the destiny of their children’s future, I pray that they will seriously consider making a super important choice, as presented above that would mark the eternal destiny for their lives. Not knowing what might happen the next hour or minute, I selfishly ask that You impact their lives immediately after being reminded of this in this devotional, so that they may have opportunity to make this all important choice. Thank You for impressing this upon my life some 38 years. You know how this would hurt me to now that anyone would be left behind, especially anyone that I love, care for, work with, or have opportunity to minister to. This includes anyone meditating on this devotional today. Thank You Lord for the provision You made for us at Calvary. I look forward to the day You decide to call me home to be with You! I am thankful, but yet plead my requests of You, and I ask all this in Your wonderful and all-powerful name, Jesus, my Lord and Savior, AMEN!
