The Challenges of Being A Role Model

SCRIPTURE FROM: Philippians 4:8-9
TRANSLATION: Living Bible (TLB)

BIBLE TEXT: …… Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about. Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and saw me doing, and the God of peace will be with you.

APPLICATION: Perhaps the greatest challenge for us as we consider the example set for us by Paul, is that we never know when someone is following in our footsteps, for many of the things we do are instinctively said or done form the content of our heart. I have 2 examples to share with you that might help you better tune in to this challenge from Paul: 1). Several couples and I were spending a weekend together. The challenge was given for everyone to get up early enough on Sunday morning to attend church together. The end result was that only the women joined me in attending church. Because of this, no children accompanied us. Later that day as we were gathered all together in one room, and I challenged the fathers to be spiritual leaders in their homes and take their families to church each week. The children sat quietly as I made my challenge, and several were even on electronic devices. However, at a later date one set of parents were discussing in the car whether they would go to church the following day. The child in the back seat pops up and shares the words that I had challenged the dad with some weeks earlier! Were the followers listening and then ready to accept the challenge? You bet ‘cha! 2). I had a relative coming to spend the weekend with my wife and me. My wife told him to not forget his church clothes. To which he responded, I went and bought a shirt with a color, so that I could dress like my uncle for church! Not only were we enthused over the effort put forth, but I had never realized that my dress code was anything special. Obviously, someone was watching! Friends, Paul shows us in this challenge today that his followers stood at a point in their life where they would go on without him in it, and they had to make a choice on whether they would apply what they learned from him, or resort back to their original way of life. We too have this same challenge in knowing that 2023 will occur within hours. Will it be just ‘more of the same’ for us, or are we using this as a steppingstone to enter into a New Year, changed by the words, actions and experiences of 2022? I am convinced that if we act on the simple message taught by Paul, God will smile at the changes He sees next year! Think about it:
=> Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right.
=> Fix your thoughts on things that are pure and lovely.
=> Dwell on the fine, good things in others.
=> Dwell on everything you can praise God for.
=> Choose to be glad about life, and the things mentioned before this.
=> Put into practice all you learned from followers of Christ and saw them doing.
Oh, that we would live in such a way that we can say to others what Paul said to his followers in that very last sentence. We must be determined to live differently to the world, and live the example set forth for us by our Lord Jesus Christ, and His faithful saints. Without that determination, we are left at the mercy of every wind of change, every move of Satan and all the evil that serves to turn us away from God.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul reminds us that if we follow the design of God, learn from His Word and obey His commands, then the peace of God will be with us. I have no greater desire than to know the peace of God is with me today and every day!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, teach us to live as honored examples of You, and in a way that others will see Jesus in and through us. Lord, I want Your perfect will in my life, and I want to do Your will in every aspect of my life. Take control Lord, teach me Your ways, give me boldness to obey, and a desire to live every day following Your will, even if it is totally contrary to that of the world in which I live. As I reflect on 2022, may I see the areas of my life that require attention and more dedication to align with Your will. As the New Year comes, may it not only bring new opportunities to let Your light shine through me, but may I also feel closer to You than ever before, and may that reflect in every word, deed and attitude. Lord, there are many in my circle of family and friends who show no evidence of knowing You or reflecting an attitude of what might be Your will for their lives. May this New Year bring renewed desires to find You, experience You, and reflect Your will for our lives, so that unbelievers would see and experience the love of Jesus, even while still here on earth. AMEN!

Follow My Example

SCRIPTURE FROM: 1 Corinthians 10:31-32; 11:1
TRANSLATION: Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

BIBLE TEXT: 31 So if you eat, or if you drink, or if you do anything, do it for the glory of God. 32 Never do anything that might make other people do wrong…..
11 Follow my example, just as I follow the example of Christ.

APPLICATION: The more prevalent phrases we hear today is ‘Don’t follow me, for I’m also lost’ or ‘Follow Christ, for He is the only perfect One’ or ‘I’m a sinner saved by grace, just like you. So don’t follow me, but God’ But what if we brought up our kids like that? Wouldn’t they soon learn that they could do whatever they want, as long as they say the right thing? This would also be the case with pastors and church leaders, if they stood in our pulpits each weekend and told us what the Word of God says, but include the disclosure that we obey the sermon, not follow after what they do when not occupying the pulpit. Friends, Jesus said that He would only say what His Father told Him to say, and He would only do what God told Him to do. In becoming a ‘Christian’, believers are expected to follow Jesus’ example and look to God for all things, including what we say and do. But how do we do that, shall we stop and ask before we speak or before every action? That would be a great idea, but God has also made a few provisions for us, in order to help us follow in His example: For the child of God, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us as our Guide, our Wisdom, our Protector and as a constant reminder that the Love is our God; through prayer – where God hears the cries of our heart, if only we will stop and talk to Him about our challenges and our need for help; and God inspired writers to pen His words so that we might know His will for our lives, and He gave us the invitation to read His Word so that the Holy Spirit might point us to all truth, wisdom and direction for our existence and for every thing that we do or say. If we are unfaithful in these things, I can assure you that the world is seeing more itself acted out through us. For this to be a better world, and to enable others to see Christ here on earth, it is incumbent upon us to be the hands a feet of Jesus. I feel strongly that before we hold up our Christian flag to tell others to whom we belong, then we need to insure that we hold no other hold on this world. We must be sold out to Jesus in order to show the world who He is and what He is capable of achieving through His earthly servants. This may be a work in progress until Jesus returns, but please be careful to not let Jesus down by showing the world only a partial and incomplete picture of who He truly is and what He stands for. Perhaps we should consider telling our unsaved friends, come follow me as I endeavor to follow Jesus every day, God being my helper. I encourage you to look closely at the proof of whose I am, and in seeing the evidence, trust in Him, just as I have done. Ask God to help you never mislead anyone, but that you are depending heavily on Him to show the world Jesus.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: I believe that if we stake our hope in Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives, and we depend on Him to guide us in the path that points to Him, through obedience we will be instrumental in pointing others towards the cross, and we could therefore comfortably invite others to follow us, as we follow Christ!

PRAYER: I wonder what our purpose on earth is, dear Lord, unless we are firm in our faith and can comfortably show others the way to eternal life. Please keep us focused on the cross, and on all that You have done for us so that our sins would be forgiven and our destination secured. Please teach us to share our faith, and may our actions and words speak so strongly that our words will be few. It is only what done for Jesus that will last and will matter. May our lives be worth the living because others saw the light of Jesus in us. AMEN!

Having the Right Attitude – Like Christ Jesus Had

DATE WRITTEN: Wednesday, 2020-07-29
WRITTEN AT: Okeechobee, FL

BIBLE REFERENCE: Philippians 2:1-5
TRANSLATION: Good News Translation (GNT)

BIBLE TEXT:  Your life in Christ makes you strong, and his love comforts you. You have fellowship with the Spirit,[a] and you have kindness and compassion for one another. I urge you, then, to make me completely happy by having the same thoughts, sharing the same love, and being one in soul and mind. Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble toward one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had:

OBSERVATION: In most aspects of businesses today, we look for ways to improve our own businesses by listening closely to advice from another who has been successful in the same field. Paul’s way of trying to help the church at Philippi was to share a few tried and proven principles from the most successful man on earth, Jesus Christ. I wonder if we do enough of this when trying to resolve issues in our church families today? Do we check in with Him, through His Word, before we speak or act? Do we imitate the attitude of Christ in our relationships? Perhaps this is something to consider as we meditate today on the Word today.

APPLICATION: Unfortunately churches find that they are not exempt from the challenges many employers, social clubs, or other companies encounter in dealing with disgruntled employees and customers. In fact, it seems like where humans are involved, there will be challenges. There was a point in my career where I wished that I was able to just do my work, and not have to deal with the Human Resources aspects and challenges with my employees, for it often became very stressful to discipline an adult worker. Based on Paul’s dealings with the church, he encapsulated the whole resolution to this whole issue into one thing – just have the attitude that Jesus had. But that may seem vague to some, and useless to others who may not know about the attitude of Jesus. And although the verses succeeding our focal verses today go into depth explaining the humility, caring and loving attitude of our King, Paul gave the church a few things to work on, and I believe this might be useful for us individually today. For you see, when we talk about the church, we are referencing the corporate body of believers that meet together in a building for the purpose of uplifting the name of Jesus Christ. So let’s look at Paul’s warnings in theses verses: 1). Your life in Christ makes you strong – In other words, a life without Christ will result in stumbling, and basing your decisions and actions merely on what you see in this old wicked world. Alternately, a life in Christ means a life supported, strengthened, guided and encouraged by the Holy Spirit; 2). His love comforts you – Life is anything but easy at times, and like I indicated above, it is often very stressful when dealing with the peculiarities of other individuals. There is no greater comfort than knowing that God’s love surrounds us, fills us and comforts us in every circumstance of life; 3). You have fellowship with the Spirit – The Comforter, or the Spirit, was given to us at the time of our conversion. Having sweet communion with the Spirit is the same as His counterpart Jesus Christ, who assured us that we could do all things through Himself! 4). And you have kindness for one another – I believe this assures us that as we experience the first three things mentioned, our hearts will be molded into the image and attitude of Christ, and we will then be capable of kindness towards one another. Friends, please read all the verses again, for Paul goes on to admonish us not to act selfishly, for when we get our minds off self, we will then have a heart to bless others, and love on them with every fiber of our being. This is especially what Jesus demonstrated for us throughout the New Testament. He spent His time helping others and showing His disciples and followers the right way to deal with others. As we conclude, let me encourage you to think seriously about this question: How will you expect others at your church to act, if they were following your example? You know, Paul said later in Scripture that we could follow him, as he follows Christ. Wouldn’t you think that our relationships would be a whole lot more like God expects of us, if we could honestly have the attitude of Christ and if we tried harder to please others more than ourselves? Oh that we might become so much like Christ that we could offer others to follow us, as we are determined to follow our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in all that we do and say.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, we are so prone to wander and we so easily mess up when dealing with others, especially those who are very challenging. Your Word is clear, that we are to think of others more highly than we think of ourselves. You have assured us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. So please cause us to stop our evil minds long enough to truly concentrate on You, seek Your face and beg for Your strength and guidance so that we might have the attitude of Jesus Christ. It is unfortunate, but we live in a world where we might be the only Bible that some may read. Oh that they may see Jesus, and may You be glorified because of all they see! AMEN!
