Understanding Death and Faith: A Scriptural Approach

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
For many of you that will read this devotional today, you probably praise God each morning for His new mercies that allowed you to see another day, and although you may also praise Him during the day, hopefully at the end of each day you celebrate in thanksgiving for the day He has blessed you with. Similarly, in our Scripture today, Solomon also considers this. It seems like he took into account the many principles, lifestyles, and righteousness of all who would offer up similar prayers to what you may do each day. After all, there is only ONE God to whom we pray. But the other thing that Solomon took into consideration is that no matter what each of our lives look like here on earth, there is something in our future that we hold in common at the end of our lives here on earth – death. Something that many of us try to avoid thinking about due to its finality in what we know today as, life here on earth. I’ve heard preachers refer to ‘everyone being on equal footing at the foot of the cross’, and there is so much truth in that. Also, I’ve heard reminders from preachers about how we all, individually, must settle things with our Creator, as no one qualifies for heaven because of the goodness of our ancestors, or the position we may hold in society while we’re alive, or the good things we may have done for others and the church while alive, and I also give a 5-star award to those preachers. BUT, does it not seem like Solomon is short-sighted in not reminding us of what Jesus taught in the New Testament? In (John 11:26), Jesus said, “He who lives and believes in Me shall never die”. You can escape death by living and believing in Jesus Christ. But the human mind, human wisdom won’t bring you to that. If you’re only coming at life from the human level and trying to find God from the human level, you’ll never make it. God must reveal Himself to you by His Spirit. But God has also revealed Himself through His Word, where He revealed, “And this is the record, that God has given to us – eternal life and this life is in the Son, and he who has the Son has life” (I John 5:11-12).” He that lives and believes in Me, Jesus said, “will never die.” So, as we conclude today’s teaching, let us note that although death may be a marker in our lifespan, it is not final. For the believer in Jesus Christ, it marks the end to life on earth and the beginning of life in heaven with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all eternity! For those who have chosen to reject the Lord Jesus Christ, death marks the end of life here on earth, and the beginning of an even worse existence in Hell with your chosen ruler, Satan. The choice is yours dear friends, but it seems like a non-issue to me. Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved (Acts 16:31)

PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of eternal life to those who place their faith and trust in the Son of God, Jesus Christ! Thank You also for the reminder today that although death is a marker in everyone’s existence here on earth, yet for the believer it is a time of celebration of even better things to come – eternity in heaven with our Father, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The more frustrated we become here on earth, the more excited we become of our future prospects! Thank You for incenting Your servant Solomon to remind us that our position in society, or our status among all classes of people – rich or poor, that a day will come when we pass on from this world onto our eternal destination that resulted from our earthly spiritual decisions. My sincere prayer is that every reader of this devotional will ensure that their eternity is secure in knowing Jesus as their personal Savior, to guarantee that they are heaven bound. For those who have rejected You, please Lord, speak persistently to them about the time in which they live and the opportunity they have to change the course of their destiny. With thankful hearts, we rejoice in Jesus our Savior and Lord. AMEN!

Overcoming Life’s Trials Through Prayer

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
It seems like troubles abound in the lives of our friends, family, and yes, even in our own lives as well. It seems extremely frustrating at times, for just when we thought we have heard of the greatest challenge a person could possibly reach; a friend will approach us with a challenge unlike any other we may have heard before. Of course, if we listen to the media, we will possibly hear THE worst, but media hype seems unreal at times! As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, whom the Bible assures us never faces something that surprises Him, we must rest assured that All Things are possible with God. Unfortunately, many times I believe we enjoy sharing the challenging times with friends, for it really produces shockingly interesting conversations as we watch for their mouth to open wide and jaws drop to all-time lows! Thankfully, I believe that believers often possess such confidence in the power of God that we naturally alleviate the frustrations and disappointments of those with no hope, for we know a Man who can, as referenced in the old gospel song. Friends, we know the Creator of this world and of all mankind. We know the Healer of all diseases affecting His created ones, for the Bible tells us of the lame man who walked again, the ruler’s son whom the people had declared dead, yet Jesus raised him up, and the leper whose skin became perfectly pure with just one touch of the Master. But in our focal verses today, James, a servant of Jesus Christ, reminds us through several points and their corresponding answers, to help us face the uncertainties of life. Let me spell them out again, with hopes that these things will stick with us, especially when trouble comes:

  • Are you suffering hardships? You should pray.
  • Are you happy? You should sing praises. 
  • Are you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

Verses 16 thru 18 goes on to remind us of a few other tips that will help us decide to step out in faith:

  • Share with believers, what may seem like, the ugly sin, or faults, that you feel guilty of. For this brings healing to your burdened soul!
  • Pray for one another, especially those who are struggling with the challenges of sin and life as a whole. For this produces wonderful results!
  • Think on past answers to prayer, where God showed His power and grace to His children, such as the example James offered about Elijah and his prayer for the rain to stop and start back up again. This helps to instill confidence in following the commands of God, even in challenging times. Start by first reflecting on past answers to your prayers – even the small ones, for this will remind you that if God did it before, we know He is quite capable of doing it again!

For the unbeliever, God wants you to listen and obey the voice of the Holy Spirit as He calls you to repentance. As an unbeliever, you can try to follow all of the above, but it will be superficial, unless you know the One to whom you are praying. Know Jesus today and know that peace of which I have explained above. However, for the fellow believer reading this devotional today, I trust that this devotional will serve as a reminder that there is great power in knowing Jesus Christ, and believing that He loves and cares for you, especially in those areas of life where you may question if you could possibly overcome the tactics of Satan. As for Your Lord, please consider allowing Him to have His will and way in your life and in all of life’s circumstances. He will never lead you astray, but rather in the center of His will for you. As you study His Word you will find the peace of God and be led by the Holy Spirit to all truth and the perfect will of God.

PRAYER
Lord, thank You for saving my soul and leaving me here on earth to share that miracle with others in search of hope and a future for eternity. Thank You also for Your servant, James, and for him sharing the wisdom needed for us to best look at challenging circumstances and to help others who may call on us for that kind of wisdom. Lord, I pray that we will be faithful and dedicated to You in all areas of life here on earth, for as we display our confidence in You, I pray that it will serve to lift others up and draw them to the foot of the cross to seek salvation in You alone. For the unbeliever who may happen upon this devotional, I pray that they may be drawn to You and develop a desire to know You personally. Please encourage fellow believers to look to You for all things we face every day and help us to gain strength through Your Word as we meditate on it. You deserve our praise, honor and worship. Be lifted up because we are fixing our eyes on things eternal and the only One who can open the doors of heaven for our journey. You are lord, and we seek Your face, oh Lord. AMEN!

Embracing Love: Lessons from the Samaritan Woman

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
For some background leading up to these particular verses, we must be reminded that Jesus was on an uncommon path to Jerusalem, by way of Samaria. This was a path not usually traveled by the Jews, for they made it a point to stay clear of the Samaritans, whom they distained and whom they felt were illegitimate and extremely distasteful to be around. So I believe that the first key point in our lesson today is to remember that prejudice and hatred for any particular sect of people is a mankind thing, as God made us all, sent His Son for all who would believe on Him, and Jesus died and rose again so that all of God’s children who come to Him (believe on Him and surrender themselves to the lordship of Jesus Christ) will be saved. Friends, I am convinced that Jesus was as comfortable with this Samaritan woman as He would have been with any king or queen from a Jewish nation. I also believe that Jesus wants to have fellowship with you and me because He created us and loves us beyond anything we could imagine. Yes, we have sinned, and yes, we have disregarded the commands of our Master in His Word, but praise God He has not turned His back on us nor joined with others who despise us because of our financial position, our ancestry, or our place in the palace of an earthly leader. Another important note for us to think about is that the Samaritan Woman seems to have conceded to the offer by Jesus for the life-giving water that only He could provide, as to say that if only I could partake of this water You offered, then perhaps I would be able to…… Is that the sort of deal we try to make when parents or close friends are trying to convince us of our need for salvation? Jesus, ‘save me’ and then perhaps these people will get off my back and leave me alone, or ‘save me’ and I will then connect with a much better crowd that I am currently involved in? You know, I come from an area that was bombarded with the threat, and often the damages, of hurricanes each year. The weather man would tell us to prepare, for a hurricane is eminent at our location over the next few days. We didn’t look to find a better deal, or something more fun to do, we started securing our homes, boats and vehicles for the onslaught of a hurricane. Why then do we not listen and adhere to God’s warnings in His Word? Like the weatherman I mentioned above, God loves us enough that He wants us to be prepared for the day that He will call us out of this world. He wants us to be ready for eternity in Heaven, rather than accepting the damnation of Hell. I wonder, have you been obedient to the call of God? If not, I encourage you to read my Footnote carefully and accept my tips on meeting my Savior and Lord. For He desires relationship with you, my friend! The Bible tells us that a home has been prepared in Heaven for those who accept Jesus as their Lord. He has prepared for your arrival my friend. Please don’t disappoint Him.

PRAYER
Lord I am so humbled by Your expression of love for this Samaritan woman that so many of Your own countrymen went to extremes to avoid contact with, because they had placed her in a box – one filled with rejects that they thought could never be worthy of You and Your love. Oh Lord, You chose to do the same for me as You did for that woman, in spite of my unworthiness, yet You loved me and chose me to live with You in Heaven throughout all eternity. But Lord, I’m afraid that we have yet to learn a lesson from Your display of mercy and love for the Samaritan woman, for we still turn up our noses at those who are different than us. We jump to our own conclusions based on our worldly rules of likes and dislikes, but seldom does that ever equal what You have demonstrated and taught us throughout Your Word. Please forgive us Lord, and help us to love like You love us, and help us to always consider others thru eyes of mercy and humbleness of our heart and soul. May it always be obvious that we love others as an expression of the love You demonstrated to us. AMEN!

Understanding False Messengers, And Learning How To Help Them per Jeremiah 29

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
I was flabbergasted by the boldness of the priest, Shemiah, to ridicule the prophet Jeremiah before the people that God supposedly sent them to minister to. As in the case of earlier chapters of the book of Jeremiah, it seems very obvious that God was working mightily through Jeremiah to inform His people the joys that lie ahead for those who obey God, and the disaster that lies ahead for those who refuse to obey God’s commands. I am of the impression that Jeremiah had earned the trust of the people, just like we would learn to love, trust, and obey the teachings of our beloved pastors today. However, in the middle of these sobering warnings by Jeremiah, and his wonderful messages of hope for the Israelites in captivity, then comes another Priest who had an opposing/contradicting message for the people. This must have been a very confusing time for the people, and this must have caused the people to doubt all messages coming from God’s supposed messengers. You see, when an audience is distant to God and His commands, they are undoubtedly numb to discerning God’s call to recognize the true and genuine messenger sent by God, and the accurate message that God had intended for them. The same remains true today, for judging God’s message and His purpose for our lives. This can only be discerned by those who are faithful and consistent in their walk with the Lord. I believe a good rule of thumb for us to follow is that if we are confused by the message from God, then it is probably an indicator that we are not close enough to God as we should be. If we were, then God would speak to us and direct us in the path He would have us go. Why not take this as an opportunity to renew your commitment to God and ask for His strong power to help you stay consistent and intimate in your relationship with Him? Prayer is our medium for communicating with God. Reading God’s Word and reminding yourself of what He teaches in His Word is the primary tool we use to hear back from God. If you question how this might be, let me assure you that God left His living Word, the Bible, for us to receive instruction and direction in our walk here on earth. If you have surrendered your life to the control of Jesus Christ, then the Holy Spirit is embedded in you, and His purpose is to keep us on track as believers in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – our triune God. Notice that Shemiah didn’t go to Jeremiah directly to clear the matter up but instead went to the people with his false message. This kind of deliberate circumvention could only serve to cause division, unbelief and mistrust in God’s messengers. The Bible tells us that our God is not a God of confusion nor One who leads us to mistrust in our God. So, when we see this occurring, we must become more diligent in prayer with the only One who could open our eyes and minds, while also dealing in the heart of the one Satan is leading to divide God’s people. Something that is very personal to me, and causes me much agitation is when I hear a messenger of God putting down another who claims to be God’s messenger. Yes, the people should be warned of false teachers, but I pray that our messengers of the Gospel will stick to obeying their calling to challenge the lost unto salvation and disciple/teach believers so that they might grow deeper in their faith. Seeing that we (believers) are all commanded to go and preach the Gospel, then this challenge also applies to us. Tell the lost about Jesus, not how awful the church down the road is about obeying the Bible. One finger pointed at them, leaves four pointed back at self!! When we listen and obey the voice of God, He will open the eyes of discernment of each believer to detect false teachers. There is so much for us to teach and preach without having to prop ourselves up by putting others down. ‘Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path‘ (Psalms 119:105). Imagine the disappointment in unbelievers when they hear believers putting one another down, for it shows that we are no example for them to follow. Lord, please take charge of your messengers so that Your Word might be extended to the whole world and bring forth fruit.

PRAYER
Thank You Lord for Your messengers who are obedient to Your call and minister to us each week. You spoke through the prophets of old, and I have no doubt that You continue to enlighten the hearts and minds of our pastors, evangelists, elders, and even us believers, so that we may extend the Gospel to everyone we come into contact with. Without the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we are like clanging cymbals – useless for extending the heart and mercies of our God. Lord Jesus, I am pleading with You today for a special touch that will embolden us to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, without seeing the need to put others down in order to build ourselves up. The Gospel speaks for itself, and I am convinced that no amount of special emphasis by us will enhance its effectiveness. I love the ministry of the late Billy Graham, who, in spite of very large stadium gatherings, or the extra special gospel singers who performed, yet he spoke the very simple gospel of Jesus Christ and You brought forward the fruit. Please Lord, we need more of that in ourselves, our churches, our evangelists and our missionaries, for You are always the main event and Your Word is sufficient for saving the lost and opening the eyes of the fallen. Help us to hide behind the cross as we speak of the One who once hung on that cross for our salvation. Speak to the one reading this devotional who needs the Savior and encourage and embolden the saved looking for a closer walk with You. AMEN!

Finding Hope in God’s Promises: A Devotional Reflection

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
I am amazed how God, the One who created us and taught us how to live, while also showing us what He is capable of when we disobey or disregard His commands, just how merciful He is to give us 2nd, 3rd and even more changes to correct our ways. In fact, He goes even further with the Israelites, a people that He ordered to report to king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, by giving them hope for their lives post Babylon reign. And before I go any further, let me remind you that while God has not given us over to the reign of another kingdom or ruler, yet He has also promised us, after our life here on earth, eternal life in Heaven to those of us that have accepted His Son, Jesus, as our Lord, Savior and Ruler of our lives, so there is also hope for us! Sadly, I must draw your attention to the verses that follow our focused verses today, for God went on to warn those who refused to follow His command in moving to Babylon. Less we are misguided, or of a false knowledge, I must remind you that often when we attend funerals/memorial services, we might become confused to hear that the individual who died have now gone on to be with the Lord. Friends, please be sure that you apply the whole Biblical truth to that awesome statement. For it is a true statement for the saints of God who accepted His Son while they were alive, but for those who have rejected this condition, the Bible says that upon their passing from life into death, they will then answer to the evil one whom they chose to follow while alive. I apologize that I digressed a little, but I felt like this was a good time to correlate this Biblical truth with the promised hope given to the Israelites. The overall message that I rejoiced in from today’s verses us that the Israelites were told they would remain in exile for 70 years, an extremely long sentence for the Israelites. But, with the hope given in these verses today, I am confident that these people must have felt a sense of relief in spite of knowing they would have to endure over 25,000 in bondage. As I mentioned above, we have no idea how many more days God has ordained for us to remain here on earth, but if you would open your heart, soul and mind to accept the truth of God’s Word, and the gift He provided through sending His precious Son for the forgiveness of our sin, then we too can face tomorrow because of the hope we have in the promises of God. For the unbeliever who struggles with life here on earth and have no hope for anything better tomorrow, please allow me to assure you of this hope that is available to all – especially you! In my FOOTNOTE you will find Biblical references that will help to guide you into accepting Jesus Christ. But don’t feel alone in your decision, speak with a local Bible Teaching Pastor, or a solid believer and tell them how you feel the Holy Spirit is dealing in your life, and/or contact me by email and I will be excited at the opportunity to introduce you to the God that I know and teach about in this blog. It would be like one beggar showing another beggar how to find bread – the Bread of Life – Jesus Christ!

PRAYER
Thank You Lord for Your goodness, mercy and love. The sacrifice You gave just for us – Your children, is far beyond anything we could comprehend. Thank You for reminding us in Your Word today of the hope that is ours when we surrender lordship of our lives to You and give You full control over everything, especially those things that burden us down and discourage us, like the Israelites must have felt with their 70-year sentence under the rulership of the Babylonians. I must repeat Your words to the Israelites, for it gives me hope on how tomorrow will go for those who believe in You: ‘I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord.’ Be glorified in me today, oh Lord, and accept my attitude of praise as I worship You and seek to know You better every day of my life. AMEN!

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
I’ve heard some believers joke about their attending church 9 months before they were born and right up to the current day!!! I too have attended church all of my life and thankful for the leadership of my parents in helping me hang on to the things of importance in my life, and in teaching me to prioritize those things. I realize that no one is saved because they go to church, but I strongly believe that they stand a much better chance of meeting the only One who can save them, by being in His presence as often as you can. Furthermore, the Bible teaches us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together with other believers. God had purpose in the church, and as His followers, He wants us to also find purpose in it. Over the years I have been blessed to feel, see and understand the heart of many pastors. Yes, they too are human, so they falter just like we do, but as in the case of Jeremiah’s teaching today, they desire that no man, woman or child choose Hell over Heaven for their eternal destiny. Each week our pastors stand before us and share their heart, just as it was burdened by the Holy Spirit during their sermon, or lesson study time, and they are exhausted at the end of each Lord’s Day. Jeremiah was prompted by God to share some very sobering thoughts with none other than the national leaders of his day. I am convinced that change comes from the top. But as a mind-sobering thought for us, I am convinced that the only meaningful example that can change our hearts, minds and souls, is that which has been directed and blessed by God. Just as our pastors repeat the importance of salvation through Jesus Christ each week, Jeremiah had a very disturbing message for the leaders of his day. Worthy of note is that Jeremiah didn’t water down the message so it would be more palatable for the leaders he spoke with. The prophet didn’t question God about whether major harm might be inflicted by the leaders or whether this challenging mission might lead to his death for delivering this message. At my church, we just concluded a study on the book of Jonah, and we were reminded that Jonah was punished because he tried to escape the command of God to go and minister in Nineveh. Throughout this short chapter we see where Jeremiah repeated the message from God several times. Our pastors stand in front of us every week and relentlessly teach, or preach, the gospel of Jesus Christ so that everyone could celebrate our risen Lord, or might recognize our shortcomings and consequently renew a right spirit within us. As a believer, we should strive to celebrate our Lord and Savior each day, for He sacrificed His very life for us, so that we may one day see the glories of Heaven. For unbelievers who may come across this devotional, I pray that the Holy Spirit would work powerfully in your heart to recognize your lost condition that leads to eternity with Satan. Parents become very angry at kids when they have to repeat themselves. Let me encourage you to listen closely when the Holy Spirit prompts you to a closer walk with Jesus, for the Bible is certain in reminding us of the soon return of Jesus to take His church home – that’s believers in Jesus Christ, my friends. Jeremiah painfully, but boldly, told the leaders of his day what the fallout would be if they refused to make things right with Almighty God. That truth still stands today, dear friends, and I pray that your pastor makes that clear in his sermons and/or teachings, for you must be well informed in order to make a good decision about your eternal destiny.

PRAYER
No matter how difficult it is for us to hear the truth, yet we acknowledge that we do not know it all here on earth. But, dear Lord, we know that You are unlimited in not only Your knowledge of every little thing, but also what lies ahead for each of us. Please continue to patiently work on us to patiently listen, wait, and to always be patient in every thing that we do or say. In our surrendering to You, we committed to follow in Your ways, listen to Your commands and be obedient in each of these. If we were flawless in this commitment, then there wouldn’t be a need to seek Your forgiveness and ask for Your ongoing guidance. Lord we need You, every hour we need You. Please help us to escape the distractions of this world and concentrate wholeheartedly on You and Your Word. Please continue to mold us and lead us in the way we should go. Jeremiah had to repeat the warning You handed down to him. Please open our eyes to all that You have taught us in Your Word so that we may know Your heart and listen carefully to Your commands. For those who will read this but need to know the Lord first and foremost, please speak persistently to them and draw them to Yourself. Please work out Your plan in each of us today, oh Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. AMEN!

Honoring God through Obedience to Authority

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
Almost 40 years ago my wife and I migrated to the United States and some years later we were accepted as as citizens with full rights in the USA. We pledged to agree and honor many laws, regulations and authorities in order to be a part of this country. Almost 50 years ago I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord and I pledged to honor Him and all that He stood for, as relayed in His Holy Word. These two pledges were linked, as I promised God that I would honor His Word, part of which deals with His ruling over the nations and in the election of their rulers. I was reminded of this as I meditated on Solomon’s words in Ecclesiastes today. And because these wise words of Solomon are inspired by the Holy Spirit, I am confident that I will be blessed if I honor and obey God’s teachings, for He is my ultimate King who will rule and reign long after our earthly presidents, kings, prime ministers, and other leaders have graduated from their earthly rules. In my working career, I once worked as an auditor who looked over the shoulders of employees and made sure they followed company rules and regulations. If we felt that an employee violated a regulation, we would write them up and quote the rule or regulation they broke. As believers, we too must learn to focus so much on the Book containing God’s instructions (the Bible) and ensure that we are obeying our Father. In Romans 13:1-2 we are instructed to obey our governing authorities for they are appointed by God, and if we find it in ourselves to disobey the authorities, we are therefore disobeying God Himself. In 1 Peter 2:13-17 we are ordered to obey government institutions, for they are provided by God to punish us when we do wrong, and honor those who do good. Dear friends, know that our Scripture today was not just a ‘wild hair’ thought up by Solomon, for he was merely honoring the word he received from our Father on high. There are several other Scriptures that support what the Holy Spirit whispered to Solomon on our behalf – several in addition to the above ones I added. See also Proverbs 24:21-22; Matthew 22:21; Titus 3:1; 1 Samuel 24:6; 1 Samuel 26:9-11 and I’m sure that your study will also reveal more. I was tickled by the latter part of verse 5 where Solomon spoke of finding time to do right. In our busy, busy, lives today we probably hear these words way too often: ‘I just didn’t have time’. At one stage of my Christian Walk, I was challenged to use the more challenging words: ‘that was just not a priority for me”. Let me encourage you to use this terminology friends, for it more accurately puts the blame on you, rather than finding excuses in saying you didn’t have time! Some may be tempted to disobey the authorities because they didn’t elect them, but in a free land where democracy thrives, authorities elected by the majority becomes the authority of us all. God tells us in His Word that He has placed them there for a time such as this. So, enough with the excuses, let’s all be mindful of the wishes of our King and always obey our earthly kings and authorities. In everything that we do, let us be awesome examples of the One we represent, Jesus Christ our Lord.

PRAYER
Thank You Lord Jesus for creating us, and this earth, for us to enjoy Your every blessing. Often, we may feel like our government authorities may be working against us, as their rules and regulations seem onerous and overpowering at times. But thank You Father for Your reminder today that You have placed them here for our good. And because You have placed them here for Your will and purpose, believers are obligated to obey, and pay allegiance to, our ultimate King! You are above all, and greater than all, so there is no question about what Your will is for us in this environment. Please remind us to stay committed to You in all walks of life and obedient to the commands You left for us in Your Word. I believe that for You to be glorified and lifted up through us, we must be operating within Your instruction and design for us. I pray that You will find us faithful, Oh Lord, my God. Amen!

Gardening Faith: Growing While We Wait for Jesus

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
With everything being done quicker and quicker these days, there is probably not a better time to be reminded about being patient. Microwavable speeds and Instant Pots in cooking. Supersonic speeds in our military jets. Instant results from medical procedures like blood tests, MRI’s, CT Scans, X-Rays, etc. So, a believer may tend to believe that after accepting Jesus as Lord, you may awake next morning in heaven! Well, guess what, that is so very near what God might do, for only He knows the date of His Son’s return to earth to take away His bride, the church (believers). However, what it seems like the Holy Spirit is teaching us through His servant James is, how we are to act, and what we are to do while we wait for the day we are taken out of this world and into the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We may sing that wonderful old hymn, that never grows old, ‘When We All Get To Heaven’, a favorite of mine, and although that is THE most wonderful day a believer could fix their eyes, heart and mind on, we must believe that Jesus has a plan for our lives while we wait for that day. Let’s be reminded that idle minds could very easily be the workplace of the evil one!
Being from a farming environment, James used an example that the students of his ministry could immediately identify with. And while farming is still a viable example today, I beg you to think of relevant examples in your particular lifestyle and use it as an example to remind you of how productive, or non-productive, you become while you wait. My wife and I recently planted a very small garden, so this farming example is very relevant at this time! Here’s how I could explain it in light of the teaching by James:
–> We added a bag of miracle-grow soil to our gardening spot – For this little garden had been sitting nonproductive for several months with just weeds making their home there. So, we had to prepare the ground. This teaches me that as we prepare to share the love, and new birth found in Jesus, we may want to develop a relationship with the person, or people we feel may need to know Him as Lord. Prepare the ground for the Gospel.
–> We planted our seeds – all the while considering how much space that each particular vegetable would need to grow as the sed caught and the plant matured. In a church setting the method of evangelism stays pretty consistent, but as you survey those to whom you hope to minister, your consideration of their circumstances, education, religious background, and more, may all be varied. So, the Holy Spirit may use various methods in helping you establish a relationship of trust with the prospect first, before inviting them to know your Jesus. Also remember that many times you may plant the seed of faith into someone, but others may witness and celebrate the harvest!
–> Daily nurturing of the new plants – hydration, food (fertilizer), keeping external interference at bay – bugs, weeds, etc. Remember, no blossoms or fruit may show for days or even weeks, yet it is important to provide nurturing, if you expect to see fruit/vegetables at some point. Just as your salvation experience probably didn’t occur without some prior prompting by the Holy Sprit, so it might very well be with the prospect you are praying for and hoping to evangelize. Nonetheless, encourage them and root for them in every step of their walk with Christ.
Notice that all of the above steps teach us patience, as James genuinely reminded us in today’s Scripture. There is never an instant planting to harvesting ratio. Should I have opened the pack of seeds and let them empty on to the unprepared ground, then sat in front of my television each day and then expect to go out and harvest my vegetables, my wife would probably have admitted me to a, insane asylum! James is teaching us that while we wait for the BIG Day for all believers, the day that we see the face of Jesus together with His Father and the Holy Spirit, we must be about our Father’s business. Try fertilizing the soul with nuggets from God’s Word each day. God wants us to flourish in our Christian walk, so that we might be a fresh, growing, productive disciple for the Kingdom while still here on earth. For the unbeliever that may happen across this devotional, or that may be in search of hope from our Creator, please read my FOOTNOTE carefully and consider the helps provided. I have a second page to this blog also, ‘To Know Jesus’. please consider reading through it and the various Scriptures provided to help you understand how to change your life. This is my heart’s cry as I write each of these blog posts.

PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I am reminded that Your garden here on earth is very similar to my vegetable garden. Seeds for some people/plants are newly planted, and we patiently wait for them to grow above ground where they may be seen and recognized by onlookers. Some are growing slowly but need nurturing/encouraged along the way in order to make good, healthy and life sustaining plants/believers. While some are bearing fruit, for which we give You thanks, for only You can truly energize and nurture our plants and believers. Thank You Lord for not only being our Creator, but our sustainer, encourager, strength and everlasting hope while we wait for our time to join You in Heaven. To God be the glory! AMEN!

Understanding Jesus’ Teachings on Service

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
In spite of Jesus teaching repeatedly that we are to serve, rather than be served, yet He demonstrated how important it could be to be served as well, based on the timing of the Holy Spirit. There are several important aspects of this familiar story in which the Holy Spirit ministered to me today, and in sharing my thoughts with you, I can only pray that God will also open your spiritual eyes to how He works in and through His children. Consider with me the following things from just the first half of John 4:
*-* Enroute to Galilee from Judea, Jesus was not afraid to go through Samaria – How often do we try to dodge that friend who spoke ill of us, or who seems to hate us, or appears to look down on us? The Jews looked down on the Samaritans as half-breeds, so although the path that Jesus took was the most direct route to Galilee, yet a Jew would go out of their way to avoid the possibility of coming into contact with the Samaritans. Friends, I am convinced that Jesus sees no ‘half-breeds’ or class of people. He created us all, and we all are precious in His sight. I believe He looks intently at the heart of mankind and either celebrates their relationship with Jesus, or He looks for ways to intently get in their way so they could be reminded of their need for a Savior. It mattered not that this was a woman, nor that she had multiple husbands, nor that Samaria was her home country. He looked at her heart, just as He does today when looking at us.
*-* Jesus asked to be served – I believe that most believers feel compelled to try and help others – to serve others, just as Jesus served His disciples at the Last Supper. If Jesus had asked to draw the water for the Samaritan woman, He would have served her need that day, and He may have even been looked upon as a gentleman. In allowing the woman to serve Him, it gave Him opportunity to compare the water she was giving, to the living water (life eternal) He could give to her. Yes, He knew where she was from and He knew about her adulterous background, but He also knew how lost she was in her heart. This causes me to stop and question myself as to who it is that I would feel intimated to serve or witness to about my Lord. Oh, that I may always use the criteria that Jesus used – what is the condition of their heart? Do they show signs of knowing Jesus? Who cares how rich they are, or how poor they are? So what if they are more, or less, educated than me. Oh, that I may never allow Satan to place excuses in my way to stop me from sharing Christ with an unbeliever, or to help a believer climb out of a dump into which they have placed themselves voluntarily.
*-* Jesus knew how this woman would impact others – Unless we are obedient to the Holy Spirit, we will merely see men and women going about their way. However, as this story develops, we know that this woman not only found personal peace with God, but she went on to impact her city. In listening to the Holy Spirit, He will guide us to similar individuals, in spite of our fears of rejection or our prejudices over various life scenarios. For the child of God who has an intimate relationship with Him and seeks to hear from Him daily through reading His Precious Word, we will know the Spirit that lives within us. He will never force us, or direct us, to do anything contrary to the Word of God. Man can only give us their opinion, but the Spirit knows the full picture and guides us accordingly. Listen careful and be ready to obey!
I am reminded of an old hymn that helps to relay the message I feel prevalent in today’s Scripture – ‘When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His word, what a glory He shines on our way. While we do His good will, He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey’!

PRAYER
You’ve shown us the way to go, and the right attitude we should have as we go. Thank You dear Lord for teaching us through Your Word – the Bible. Many were impacted because You chose to love, understand, and break down barriers of prejudice and pride. I don’t feel like we’ve done a good job learning from Your example Lord, so I pray that You will work mightily through every reader of this devotional. May we truly learn from Your teaching and be willing to follow in Your footsteps, so that all may know Jesus before it’s a day too late. John 3:16 tells us that whosoever believes in You will have eternal life. That leaves no one out, and nor should we in our daily witness. With Your power and Your grace, please draw all men and women unto You, and use us, if at all possible, please Jesus! AMEN!

How to Discern True Messengers of God

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
I can hardly imagine how much the hearts of the prophets must have been impacted by the messages given by God for them to deliver. Think about it, if you were given a message for a small group of friends, I feel pretty sure that you wouldn’t think twice about delivering that message. For your home church, that may be just as easy for you to deliver that message. But how about giving that same message before a crowd where other denominational leaders may be present, as well as many political leaders from your state? Might be a bit more challenging, right? But in our Scripture referenced today, God issued a word for Jeremiah to deliver to ‘prophets’. Now, Jeremiah was also a prophet, so he would be delivering this message to his contemporaries, and God wants them to be aware that He will not stand for false prophets any longer. No doubt, Jeremiah did some soul searching and questioning of God to make sure that no fingers were being pointed at him, before ever hitting the road to deliver this critical message from God! However, I feel like this is a moving example for those of us that move to a new area, and we begin searching for a new church, or while on vacation and we look for a church to visit. Unfortunately, our world has not learned a whole lot from what God said in His Word, for there are still pastors and churches who meld in much too much of the world’s ideals so they could, presumably, attract more of the world’s population. But can’t the people simply go to a movie theater or live show somewhere to get that kind of wishy-washy environment? When the Holy Spirit is tapping on the heart of a sinner to know Christ, or a believer to return to Him, don’t you think that they will opt to attend a local church instead of places like I gave in my example above? But how then will they know a legitimate, Holy Spirit empowered, and Bible teaching church? Is it the quiet one down the street, or perhaps the popular one on the other side of town, or should they travel to the next town where you’ve heard a lot about the good life groups and lots of programs they have? In addition to asking the Holy to guide you to a church where He knows you will grow in your faith, I believe that you can also use some of the principles from our Scripture today:
Vs 28 – God insisted that His ‘True Messengers preach every Word that He declares’. Try attending a church that preaches through every verse in the Bible. You will find some messages that will take you to another level of joy, and some that may really mash your toes because of truths that you need to adopt into your Christian lifestyle. They might even apply these principles to current day events to help you discern right from wrong in a biblical and Godly sense, rather than a political and worldly view;
Vs 35 – Take your tools to church with you. It is important that you have your Bible in your lap and that you follow along with what is being taught. The pastor in front of that church is human just like you, and some have been known to fail, just like you do at times. A good orator could make everything they say sound very believable, but when you are holding them accountable by reading the same Scriptures they are preaching from, you stand a better chance of ensuring that the reference in vs 28 is a reality – that they are True Messengers of the God you went there to worship and learn about.
As you leave that place of worship, examine the message in light of vs 35: What is the Lord’s answer delivered through the Word that day. And/or What is the Lord saying to you through the Word preached that day. If you struggle with this, contact that pastor and ask for clarification, or contact another pastor in whom you have already developed a good confidence level, and discuss the matter with him. Think about this dear friend: While on the internet, you do everything possible to make sure you are on a legitimate site and not a fake site developed under false pretenses in order to steal your confidential information. Emails you receive are much the same – legitimate or are they spam or junk? Why should you do anything less in selecting a church, or attending one, or in listening to the teaching/preaching of God’s Word from that church?

PRAYER
Dear Lord Jesus, You have taught us everything we need to know for salvation, righteousness and for living in obedience with Your Word. Yet we have allowed the world to soften our grip on obedience and the boldness to stand firm in spite of any worldly repercussion. We need more of You in every walk of life while here on earth Lord. Please continue to work on us and develop us into the children You would have represent You here on earth. Whether its false prophets or uncommitted Christians, I believe Your Word would indicate that both are tasteless in Your mouth and You would spit us out. Just as we could be good, committed, longtime employees, help us to be even more committed to our stance with You. Others need to see Jesus in us, otherwise we look more like the False Prophets You spoke of through Jeremiah. Please have Your will and way in my life, and also in the lives of those who recommit themselves to you after this reminder today. AMEN!
