Honoring God through Obedience to Authority

DATE POSTED
Monday, May 26, 2025, and I was blessed to be at Mariposa at Hunter Road, San Marcos, TX when God inspired me to prepare this devotional. My Footnote will tell you how to find and read any and all episodes that I have shared over the years.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Read Ecclesiastes 8:2-8 in your Bible or click on it to read it online in the New Living Translation (NLT).

APPLICATION – as inspired by the Holy Spirit
Almost 40 years ago my wife and I migrated to the United States and some years later we were accepted as as citizens with full rights in the USA. We pledged to agree and honor many laws, regulations and authorities in order to be a part of this country. Almost 50 years ago I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord and I pledged to honor Him and all that He stood for, as relayed in His Holy Word. These two pledges were linked, as I promised God that I would honor His Word, part of which deals with His ruling over the nations and in the election of their rulers. I was reminded of this as I meditated on Solomon’s words in Ecclesiastes today. And because these wise words of Solomon are inspired by the Holy Spirit, I am confident that I will be blessed if I honor and obey God’s teachings, for He is my ultimate King who will rule and reign long after our earthly presidents, kings, prime ministers, and other leaders have graduated from their earthly rules. In my working career, I once worked as an auditor who looked over the shoulders of employees and made sure they followed company rules and regulations. If we felt that an employee violated a regulation, we would write them up and quote the rule or regulation they broke. As believers, we too must learn to focus so much on the Book containing God’s instructions (the Bible) and ensure that we are obeying our Father. In Romans 13:1-2 we are instructed to obey our governing authorities for they are appointed by God, and if we find it in ourselves to disobey the authorities, we are therefore disobeying God Himself. In 1 Peter 2:13-17 we are ordered to obey government institutions, for they are provided by God to punish us when we do wrong, and honor those who do good. Dear friends, know that our Scripture today was not just a ‘wild hair’ thought up by Solomon, for he was merely honoring the word he received from our Father on high. There are several other Scriptures that support what the Holy Spirit whispered to Solomon on our behalf – several in addition to the above ones I added. See also Proverbs 24:21-22; Matthew 22:21; Titus 3:1; 1 Samuel 24:6; 1 Samuel 26:9-11 and I’m sure that your study will also reveal more. I was tickled by the latter part of verse 5 where Solomon spoke of finding time to do right. In our busy, busy, lives today we probably hear these words way too often: ‘I just didn’t have time’. At one stage of my Christian Walk, I was challenged to use the more challenging words: ‘that was just not a priority for me”. Let me encourage you to use this terminology friends, for it more accurately puts the blame on you, rather than finding excuses in saying you didn’t have time! Some may be tempted to disobey the authorities because they didn’t elect them, but in a free land where democracy thrives, authorities elected by the majority becomes the authority of us all. God tells us in His Word that He has placed them there for a time such as this. So, enough with the excuses, let’s all be mindful of the wishes of our King and always obey our earthly kings and authorities. In everything that we do, let us be awesome examples of the One we represent, Jesus Christ our Lord.

PRAYER
Thank You Lord Jesus for creating us, and this earth, for us to enjoy Your every blessing. Often, we may feel like our government authorities may be working against us, as their rules and regulations seem onerous and overpowering at times. But thank You Father for Your reminder today that You have placed them here for our good. And because You have placed them here for Your will and purpose, believers are obligated to obey, and pay allegiance to, our ultimate King! You are above all, and greater than all, so there is no question about what Your will is for us in this environment. Please remind us to stay committed to You in all walks of life and obedient to the commands You left for us in Your Word. I believe that for You to be glorified and lifted up through us, we must be operating within Your instruction and design for us. I pray that You will find us faithful, Oh Lord, my God. Amen!

God’s Ultimate Authority

SCRIPTURE  FROM:   Jeremiah 27:4-7 (NLT)

TEXT:  4 …. ‘This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: With my great strength and powerful arm I made the earth and all its people and every animal. I can give these things of mine to anyone I choose. Now I will give your countries to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who is my servant. I have put everything, even the wild animals, under his control. All the nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until his time is up…..

OBSERVATION:   God spoke with authority to kings of neighboring countries who came to visit the new king of Judah, Zedekiah. He gave a warning to them of what he had planned for their countries under the reign of His ambassador, King Nebuchadnezzar, and God shared with them where His authority was coming from. Our God is still in ultimate control today, so being reminded of His authority is a good reminder for us also. Let’s meditate on the full impact this has in our lives…

APPLICATION:   As children, no matter how good we were, we had a time of testing the authorities in our lives to see who we seriously had to pay attention to, and be obedient to. If you are honest with yourselves, I’m sure that you remember running to mom, when dad said ‘no’ on something. And of course making mom feel sorry for you, when dad said absolutely ‘no’ to something. What happened when you surrendered your life to Jesus and knew that you owed your allegiance to Him? Did you have any difficulty understanding why this was necessary, or what possibly gave him the authority to tell you what to do, or not do? As I read these verses today, God got my attention to the authoritative manner in which God had Jeremiah speak to these kings. Unless you lose sight of what authority kings had in those days, let me remind you of a story I recently read about Esther. After asking her to speak with the king, Esther reminded Mordecai that she was not allowed to go before the king but once in 30 days, unless he summoned her. Being the wife of the king, I would say that was a lot of power! Yet God sent his servant Jeremiah before these kings and, in verse 5, He reminded them that He is the one who made the earth, the people and every animal. And  because He owns them, He could give them to whomever He pleases. Now occasionally we hear that type of talk in reference to material things, or we may even say something similar about our kids, but have you ever heard this type thing said in reference to a whole country? Friends, with our finite minds, we are so limited to even imagine the scope of power that our God truly has. Is there any wonder when we see things happening today, that we sit and wonder in amazement why things happen the way they do, and for what reason certain things must have happened? Our God has all authority in heaven and on earth, and as we acknowledge that He owns, rules and reigns over it all, doesn’t He have the right to do what He pleases, when He pleases and for whatever reason He sees fit? May I encourage you friend to place your faith and trust in Jesus, God’s precious Son. For God has warned us that He will come again to take His children home to be with His Father. He will know ‘His’ children by name, because they sought His forgiveness and surrendered their hearts to the resurrected Christ. As in the case of the countries spoken of in verse 5 above, God has a predetermined plan for His children, and a very unfortunate plan for those who have chosen to reject Him. Knowing the rules ahead of time, where will you spend eternity my friend?

PRAYER:   Thank You Lord Jesus for the sacrifice You made, so that I may know where I will spend eternity! All authority is in Your hands Heavenly Father, but I thank You for also setting the ground rules ahead of time, so that we could be prepared for Your coming, and Your final judgment. Thank You for calling me to You, even in the noise of this sinful world. Thank You for already speaking very loudly to my readers, and I thank You for the decisions that have already been made to accept You as Lord. I especially pray for those who have made the decision to accept eternal damnation in hell, rather than accept Your love and forgiveness. As long as there’s breath in their bodies I know that You could still perform miracles in their life, so please draw these ones to You blessed Lord. AMEN!

Respecting Authority

May I encourage you to get your spiritual ‘Nuggets’ to start your day off right? Pretty amazing that our awesome God would consider feeding even us with His Word! May I encourage you to read the whole devotional, and look for a blessing, friend!………

Today’s Bible Reference: 1 Peter 2:13–17
Today’s Bible Text: 13 For the Lord’s sake, obey every law of your government: those of the king as head of the state, 14 and those of the king’s officers, for he has sent them to punish all who do wrong, and to honor those who do right. 15 It is God’s will that your good lives should silence those who foolishly condemn the Gospel without knowing what it can do for them, having never experienced its power. 16 You are free from the law, but that doesn’t mean you are free to do wrong. Live as those who are free to do only God’s will at all times. 17 Show respect for everyone. Love Christians everywhere. Fear God and honor the government.
The Bible Translation: The Living Bible (TLB)

My Take Away: This is a very challenging topic for us today, for we have been taught to be independent thinkers; stand up for what you feel is right; speak out against things that appear to you to be wrong; no one is greater than you, so stand tall for your beliefs. Friends, do you see either of these things in the above verses today? I would dare say that God’s Word teaches pretty much just the opposite to what the world will teach you is the right thing to do. Many of us are caught up in a lot more political talk right now than we would ever care to acknowledge. We hear so much about how awful our government leaders are, and how we need to replace them with more honest politicians. Please don’t misunderstand me, I firmly believe that the Word of God teaches that we should vote, and that we should vote out dishonest politicians, but friends, we must be careful that we always live out these verses taken straight from the pages of God’s Word. Our lives should be such that even if the world felt hateful towards us, or Christianity as a whole, that they would look at our consistent behavior – that aligns with every thing we preach, and they would be silenced realizing that we are living – acting and talking, exactly what we have preached in the best of times. It is clear in God’s Word that He ordains our government leaders, and puts them in place as His representatives, for such a time as this. How dare us disrespect them, disobey them, speak badly about them and not pray for their success. If we ever lean towards such action as the latter, are we not then worse than the world in acknowledging our disillusion about the authority and will of God? We are told in these verses about how important governments are to our earthly structure, and we are told what our role is. I would encourage you to keep this foremost in your minds, and the instructions given to us in Romans 13, especially during this year for elections for many of us. We have an awesome God to serve and obey, let’s be especially careful to not afford the ways of the world to distract our obedience to our God.

Prayer: Father, we are often distracted, tempted and taunted in our Christian walk, especially through our earthly process of electing new government officials. Such an important part of our earthly walk, yet Satan uses it at every opportunity to bring out the worse in Your children. Based on the verses in today’s scripture reading, I believe You have made it clear that this is an area where Your children can be a shining example of whose we are. For how can the ungodly possibly keep a consistent, honest respect for the very authority that is often corrupt from a worldly perspective? Lord Jesus, these are times where we can shine as Your ambassadors here on earth. Please give us the boldness to do just that. May we represent You well, and may our actions and our words align as a witness to what we have claimed before You and before our church family. I ask these things knowing that my readers and I need a special touch from You to always stay committed to You and Your Word, regardless of what we may hear expressed by worldly politicians. It’s all about You Jesus – even in our views about those who lead us. May this remain evident through our very character, AMEN!
