The Road To Zion

SCRIPTURE  FROM:   Psalm 84:5-7 (TLB)

TEXT:  Happy are those who are strong in the Lord, who want above all else to follow your steps. When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of springs where pools of blessing and refreshment collect after rains! They will grow constantly in strength, and each of them is invited to meet with the Lord in Zion.

OBSERVATION:   I read these verses and their context in other versions, and I would encourage you to do the same, but it is obvious that the Psalmist was encouraged as he reflected on the various walks of life that he travels, and in each case he not only finds God there, but God also encourages him along to the final road that leads to Zion, where he will one day be standing with outstretched arms to welcome us home! Praise to the majesty of our Living God!!

APPLICATION:   It seems like as we reflect on our day, or on the past week, month or year, we sometimes look to God and ask “Why did I travel down that road, precious Lord?” Sometimes these reasons become evident to us, but at other times we tend to question things like: the days I spent in hospital; the loss of a loved one; the challenges I face on the job; or the spit in my church. Friends, I believe it is important for the Christian to stop and remind ourselves that after salvation, all roads lead to Zion where we will meet with Jesus and His Father for eternity! As we look intently at our end goal, life becomes very much like a soccer game, for there are lots of obstructions along the way, and so are there distractions, setbacks, restarts, etc. The way that we handle each of these will either bring glory to God, or perhaps disappointment if we tried to do life without Him. Remember, at our conversion, He sends His Holy Spirit to live within us to direct and lead us in life here on earth. For us to ignore that gift and still do life in our fashion, in our own weakness, and under continued pressure from the evil one, would totally disappoint our Savior who sacrificed His own dear life, so that we might be over-comers in these very things. Friends, we can expect bumps in the road as we live in the light of heaven, but let’s always remember that there is nothing that our God cannot handle, if we are humble enough to ask Him and let Him.

PRAYER:   Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that only You can fight the evil of this world and the adversary – Satan. Please help me to acknowledge that daily, so that I might be reminded to always seek Your face and ask for the blessings from Your hand. Thank You for sending the Comforter to be my guide, my protector and my encourager in this challenging life here on earth. Please help me to use all available resources from You, instead of trying to do life alone. With Your help, I can live in peace. In my own power, I will live under immense stress and constantly battling with the evil one. Lord, I’m pretty sure that I’m not alone in all that I’ve asked, so I plead with You to also bless my readers in this way as well. Lord, we want to be more like You, and we can only do that in submission to Your will, Your power and the direction of Your sweet Holy Spirit. We submit to You all over again today Lord. AMEN!

Our Strength and Our Guide

Post Date:

Friday, 2017-11-03
SCRIPTURE

From:

2 Timothy 1:7-8a (ERV)

Text:

The Spirit God gave us does not make us afraid. His Spirit is a source of power and love and self-control.

So don’t be ashamed to tell people about our Lord Jesus.

OBSERVATION:
Paul was mentoring his son in the faith, Timothy, and doing everything possible to warn him about situations he would possibly face as he entered his mission field. To face the challenges, Paul found it important to remind Timothy who his ‘support arm’; ‘encourager’; ‘strength’ and ‘guide’ would be. Perhaps we need to be reminded of this as we enter each day and face the many challenges that await us!
APPLICATION:
There are probably two or more types of people today. Those who face each day with vigor and vitality, knowing that they have been given another opportunity to bless others and celebrate God. While the other group probably moans over the mistakes of yesterday and can’t imagine how much worse it will be today in their world. Friends, we are reminded in the Scripture today that God’s Holy Spirit resides inside those of us that have surrendered our lives to His lordship, and that we have nothing to be afraid of. Through Paul, God is reminding us that His Holy Spirit:

  1. Does not make us afraid – This makes me think that any fear that arises must be Satan’s way of trying to discourage or weaken our determination;
  2. Source of power – We are reminded that our weaknesses mean nothing, compared to the power source that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ. When we tend to worry about how certain things will be accomplished, let’s remind ourselves whose power is supporting us!
  3. Love – Knowing that we are loved by the Creator and King of this universe, gives us encouragement to do our best, to not be afraid and to face each day knowing that God has everything under His control. God loves us way too much to see us plunder through life in doubt or without hope;
  4. Self-Control – Buried deep inside of us is the old self that is bursting to expose itself at every opportunity. However, we are reminded that God’s Holy Spirit provides us with self-control. I tend to think of that as keeping the ‘old self’ under submission, and allowing the Spirit to expose us in the light of Jesus Christ. We should always have a desire to have others see Jesus in us! An old preacher had a reminder note stuck to his pulpit “Oh that they might see Jesus”. I pray that often, because I want to be used by Jesus in His ministry. Let them look at me but see Jesus in all that I do or say.
PRAYER:
Thank You Father for Your Holy Spirit. You knew from the very beginning that we could not live in this world under our own strength and still win over the ills of Satan. You have blessed us with power, love, self-control and bravery to not be afraid in this world, for You are with us in every way. What a joy and oh what peace, to know that our Savior is also our Master and Lord. We need your strength each day Lord, please help us to represent You in every part of our character. AMEN!

The Compassion of Christ

Post Date:

Tuesday, 2017-05-02
SCRIPTURE

From:

Mark 6:36-38 (ERV)

Text:

36 So send the people away. They need to go to the farms and towns around here to buy some food to eat.”37 But Jesus answered, “You give them some food to eat.”

They said to Jesus, “We can’t buy enough bread to feed all these people. We would all have to work a month to earn enough to buy that much bread!”

38 Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have now? Go and see.”

They counted their loaves of bread. They came to Jesus and said, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.”

OBSERVATION:
Jesus had been bombarded by crowds every day, and now wanted to escape for a few hours with His close followers to just relax and refresh. However, as they were approaching their destination they realized that the crowd was 2 steps ahead of them, and in spite of going the long way around, they were already on the other side of the lake. Jesus could easily have thrown His hands up and turned around to return where He and His disciples left from, but He had compassion on the crowd gathered and resumed His ministry to them.
APPLICATION:
I wonder how often we shrug off our responsibility to care for others like Jesus did? I wonder how many ministry opportunities are missed when we do that? I wonder how often we skew the concept of Jesus in the eyes of others, because we acted in a totally different way than what they were expecting Christ’s followers to act like? Jesus was looking for respite, but instead faced the same crowd that He was hoping to escape for a short period. Not only did Jesus attend to their spiritual needs for this huge crowd, but He also attended to their physical need of nourishment. I want you to think like most of the disciples did. Imagine taking an extra couple of friends home for supper, unannounced to your spouse – the cook who may have prepared enough for 2. Now imagine that you dropped a bombshell on your wife that you would like for her to prepare a meal for your Sunday School class of 30. If you survived divorce on that daring request, imagine that you are the pastor of a church and you asked your wife to prepare a meal for the congregation. Whoa, that’s a huge and daring request! OK, so this request, or demand, Jesus made of His followers to feed the crowd of over 5,000 was humongous in the eyes of the disciples, especially with them not having brought any provisions. However, what was impossible in the eyes of man, was totally possible with God! Once again Jesus had compassion on the crowd and used what little His followers found among the crowd, to multiply it and make it more than sufficient for the need at hand. Friends, let’s learn to never question God when we feel like He is directing us. If He created the world from absolutely nothing, and if He created man from just dirt, can you imagine what He could still do today in the lives of those He created and gave up His very own Son’s life for? As we stand in awe of His awesome power and compassion, may we recommit yet again to give Him control and allow Him to rule and reign in our lives, for His ultimate glory? May we be willing to give wholeheartedly like our Saviir did!
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank You for accepting us as You children who are so desperately in need of a Savior. Our awareness of Your power and Your giving has been revitalized as we read this story once again. Now may we be willing to exercise our faith and strive to live our life experiences with You in mind and as our example. May others desire to know You personally because of seeing You in every fiber of my life. Bless my readers and encourage them to do the same. AMEN!

Where The Power Comes From!

Post Date:

Thursday, 2017-03-16
SCRIPTURE

From:

Exodus 17:9-13 (NCV)

Text:

So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men and go and fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill, holding the walking stick of God in my hands.”10 Joshua obeyed Moses and went to fight the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held his hands up, the Israelites would win the fight, but when Moses put his hands down, the Amalekites would win. 12 Later, when Moses’ arms became tired, the men put a large rock under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ hands—Aaron on one side and Hur on the other. They kept his hands steady until the sun went down. 13 So Joshua defeated the Amalekites in this battle.
OBSERVATION:
Moses had been given the ‘Staff of God’ while dealing with the Egyptian king and he saw God perform miracle after miracle to change a stubborn man’s heart. He had also used the staff on many occasions in the wilderness to do such miracles as parting the Red Sea, bringing forth water from a rock, etc. Then, of course, we are told in this passage how Moses also used the Staff to deliver Joshua and his men who protected the Israelites from the onslaught of the Amalekites. The source of the power to win this battle is evident!
APPLICATION:
I find it so interesting that we seek God in earnest prayer when we are sick or when something serious is going on in our life. However, when God answers our prayers and delivers us from, what seemed to be a very critical situation, we resort to giving praises to the handiwork of the doctors; the great care by the nurses; the love and concern of our family; etc, but often we move on with life instead of recognizing that it was the power of the Almighty, merciful Father that brought us through. In reading this biblical story today, it is very evident where the power came from for Joshua and his men to ‘overwhelm the Amalekites’, as one translation puts it, for as long as Moses held up the ‘Staff of God’, Joshua and his army would win, but when he became tired and the Staff of God dropped, Joshua and his men would suffer under the Amalekites. Could it be that it is the ‘power of God’ that: heals the sick and afflicted today; or comforts the broken hearted; or saves the unlikely neighbor or enemy of yours when you pray? Friends, I believe that when we recognize God in response to our prayers, we must not ‘beat around the bush’ about any worldly influence in that situation, instead we must use that as a praiseworthy situation to which God deserves our praise and thanksgiving. Those are especially times of witnessing for the awesome work of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the sweet Holy Spirit that prompts us to pray for power from on high. There just isn’t any other name or no other power like that of Jesus. As you acknowledge the power of our God, the unsaved will stop and begin to understand through real life situations how truly awesome our God is. May I suggest that you continue to pray with all your heart, soul and mind, but never forget to follow through in praise and honor to the God who can do all things, especially miracles where there is no other explanation for the outcome. Lift up the banner of God friend, so that the world might know and believe in the one true God and His precious Son, Jesus our Lord!
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, we are often so ungrateful for all that You do in answering our prayer (lifting our ‘Staff of God’ before You), yet we are so quick to follow the crowd in giving others praise for accomplishing the very work that we prayer to You for. Shameful, shameful on our part. Please forgive us. I believe it is evident that You perform these miracles so that You might be lifted up, not that we might be satisfied that we have access to the Father anytime we need Him. You are not our ‘Santa Claus’, but rather, You are the God who created us; the God who saved us; the God who hears the heart cry of a sinner who had turned their back on You, yet You are willing to forgive and receive us as holy and acceptable to You. You are the same God that hears our prayer for circumstances that seem impossible to us, and You are not only attentive to our prayer, but You answer our prayers in the only way that is perfect. Lord, I have no understanding why we would not be in a mode of continuous praise and adoration of such an awesome Father, but You do, and so I plead with You to touch the hearts of Your children once again and teach us to recognize Your power and never be ashamed of giving You praise and glory for Your mighty works. Thank You Heavenly Father, AMEN!

God Hears Our Prayers

Monday, 2016-11-07

Scripture

Bible Reference: 2 Kings 19:17-20

Bible Text:  17 Lord, it is true that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all those nations 18 and have burned their idol-gods. But they weren’t gods at all; they were destroyed because they were only things that men had made of wood and stone. 19 O Lord our God, we plead with you to save us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone are God.”

20 Then Isaiah sent this message to Hezekiah: “The Lord God of Israel says, ‘I have heard you!

Bible Translation: The Living Bible (TLB)

My Take

May I encourage my friends today to lift up holy hands and praise God, the creator of this universe, every day of our lives! I encourage you to do this whether things are going your way, of it seems like your world is coming to an end. Think about it friends, this helps us to put into perspective the One to whom we are about to place our heaviest burdens, and our deepest woes. The gods of those who make their own images of wood or stone had nothing to praise, but as we look out of our windows and see the beautiful sunrise and hear the birds chirping, or as in my case this week, I can hear the surf rolling onto the shoreline, don’t we need to approach God with words of affirmation of who He truly is? When we stop to count our blessings that our feet still work, and compare that to the gentleman we saw yesterday who had no feet, are we thankful yet? Friends, we may feel like the whole world is on our shoulders because of all that we have to worry about today, but may I encourage each of us to do just like Hezekiah did, and take these burdens and lay them at the feet of Jesus and pour out our soul to Him! God knows all things before we ever take them before Him, but in asking, we are recognizing that we absolutely cannot do anything about our situations, and we acknowledge that the reason we ask is that God can do all things, and only those things that fit within the confines of His perfect will. Hezekiah opened up his case before God and pleaded with Him for His help. A situation where all Hezekiah could see was total destruction of his people. Pretty serious, I would say. What’s your most serious ‘case’ today friend? Are you willing to place it before Jesus and ask Him to take charge and bring about the perfect resolution? Hezekiah never showed any signs of doubt or fear, but he had no sooner laid his petitions before God, when he received a message from God through His servant Isaiah, that his (Hezekiah’s) message was heard! No need for God to expand on that, for who are we to tell God what to do? We simply take our cares before God, share with Him our heart’s desire, and leave the resolution up to Him. Sometimes, He may have to change us, but many times He may want to answer our prayers in much the same way that we asked. Remember, God’s in control, not us!

Prayer

In considering who You are, and being reminded of Your awesome power and concern for Your children, we acknowledge that we are mere servants bringing our petitions before the very God who created us and the universe in which we exist. Our concerns seem humongous to us, but praise God from whom all blessings flow, we present our concerns before the same God who raised Lazarus from the dead, brought Jesus back to life on the third day after His crucifixion and, He walked on water to rescue His disciples who were in trouble out on the waters. Further, He made the lame to walk again, the blind to see and the deaf to hear, so what again did we say is our biggest dilemma that we are concerned about today? Should we have confidence that God can handle our challenges also? Friends, we are in good hands with our God! Notice that Hezekiah didn’t try to enlarge his army or increase his artillery, instead he took his threatening letter and opened it before the same God I just tried to describe, and asked for His guidance and help. There are stories in the Bible where God protected His people by bringing confusion so approaching enemy armies, who wound up destroying themselves! Do we dare ask or question how could God possibly resolve our BIG issues? He’s got this friend! Trust Him and obey His commands, for there’s no other way! In that same awesome power, I ask these things dear Jesus, AMEN!

When Your Back’s ‘Against The Wall’

Saturday, 2016-09-10

Scripture

Bible Reference: 2 Kings 6:15–18

Bible Text: 15 When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. 16 “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” 17 Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. 18 As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please make them blind.” So the LORD struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked.

Bible Translation: New Living Translation (NLT)

My Take

A Lot of times we do everything we can about a circumstance, and we may even gain the help of others to help us resolve the issue, but there are times when nothing seems to work and we just don’t know what else to do. I believe the saying “you just feel like you are between a rock and a hard place” truly explains your dilemma. In our verses today, we can see where the servant of the man of God was really in a panic and may have felt like described above. However, the man of God knew that there was a whole lot more to the story, because He knew who really held the answers and he knew, from experience, that there was nothing too difficult for his God. I believe you can see from the story that one may have known about God, but one actually knew God personally, and had one-on-one experience with the God of this universe. Friends, as you consider/meditate on these verses today, may I encourage you to choose and pursue the one whom you will serve? And as you choose, please note that a very personal and daily relationship is very important, for how will you know what your Father is capable of unless you spend time with Him; obey His commands to show that you respect His leadership in your life; seek Him in conversation (prayer) often – little and big challenges of life, so that You would grow confident in His mighty works and His awesome power; and trust Him wholeheartedly in all things – even when His direction may seem impossible to you, (Like in this story with Elisha and his servant boy). Having your back ‘against the wall’ just means that you have done everything you can, and now it’s time for God to take over. This is an everyday occurrence for most of us, because we are often faced with challenges that we know absolutely nothing about how to handle it, or the possible outcome. Friends, there is no god like our God! Rejoice in that proven fact today and praise Him even in your storms of life and the greatest impossibilities – at least in your eyes.

Prayer

Father, You are GREAT and greatly to be praised! There are so many miracles in Your Word that proves to us Your awesome power and greatness, and we especially thank You for this miracle through Your servant Elisha. Yet one more reminder of You performing the impossible (at least in man’s eyes) in order to protect Your servant and display to the unsaved who is really in charge of this whole earthly operation! Lord, You are well aware of our many challenges today, and I thank You sincerely for the ways that You have displayed Your glory in such miraculous ways for us. Lord, we want our loved ones to know You, so if that includes working miraculously so they could witness Your power, then we stand waiting for You to work  – even if You do it through us. May You be glorified today by those who know You, and may You be recognized by those who need to know You. Please use us as Your humble servants to accomplish Your will, if desired by You. I love You Lord, AMEN!

God’s In Control

Thursday, 2016-07-21

Scripture

Bible Reference: Job 34:10–13

Bible Text:  10 If any of you are smart, you will listen and learn that God All-Powerful
does what is right. 11 God always treats everyone the way they deserve, 12 and he is never unfair. 13 From the very beginning, God has been in control of all the world.

Bible Translation: The Contemporary English Version (CEV)

My Take

If, at work, I’m at the controls and operating the computer during a demonstration in the presence of an audience, I tend to be a little tensed and nervous at times, hoping that I’ll click on the right link, or get us to the next screen quickly and accurately. Recently I was at someone else’s office and they were ‘driving’ (operating the computer), and they quickly told me how stressed they were! Let’s consider that illustration together with the Word of God in the above verses. Wouldn’t it be easy to deduce that we would be a whole less stressed if we allow God to be God, instead of us trying to take that role on by doing things and making decisions without Him? Friends, we must always remember that, without our help, God created the universe; hung the stars in space; handled all of the intricate programming for the earth to spin just right so that we would receive the right amount, and duration, of sunlight. Recently I saw a photo of a waterfall coming down from a very high mountain. How is that possible? We usually dig deep into the ground for a well of water, do you suppose that anyone ever thought to go and dig at the top of a mountain? This is one of those unexplained wonders of the miraculous hand of God! So friends, why do you suppose that we fall into the tricks of Satan by thinking that our aches, pains, finances or other circumstances are beyond the ability of God to help us place in order? For those of us who have given God control of our lives, we are super blessed to be His child/His chosen one! He has already shown enough love for us that He sent His Son to Calvary as proof of His love and to provide a means of us getting to join Him in heaven, Can you even imagine how much more He has in store for His children? While this is reviving and encouraging for the believer in Jesus Christ, this should also be an answer to many who are stressed to the limit and need the hope of One who is greater than all of their concerns! May I encourage you to read my ‘Footnote’ for tips on how to know this Jesus of mine, this Strong One who has been in control of this world from the very beginning? I can assure you that you will never regret it!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Creator of this world and of every human being, thank You for accepting us as your children, and for allowing us access to Your throne. Please help us to place our faith and trust in You and Your awesome power. Our issues often appear very large and insurmountable to us, but when we consider the awesome works of Your hand, we can rest assured knowing that we’re in good hands.Thank You Father for loving us enough to care so much about us. Please help us to show our appreciation and respect of your power, by giving You full control of our lives. Lord, rule in us and show Your power through us as we share Your love with others. In the wonderful name of Jesus I ask these things, AMEN!
