God’s Chosen One May Not Be Logical To Us

Sunday, 2016-10-16

Scripture

Bible Reference: Romans 9:10–12

Bible Text:  10:12 Don’t forget what happened to the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Even before they were born or had done anything good or bad, the Lord told Rebekah that her older son would serve the younger one. The Lord said this to show that he makes his own choices and that it wasn’t because of anything either of them had done.

Bible Translation: The Contemporary English Version (CEV)

My Take

I believe that a lot of us try to put so many conditions on what a person should be qualified to do, in our eyes, or based on our previous experience with the decisions that were made before us. Case in point: we may have seen our church decline in membership and possibly in Christian growth under an aging pastor that is just about ready for retirement, so our logical next step would be to bring in a young whipper-snapper to take the reigns, excite the congregation and bring in younger families. In fact, I believe we become so practical and logical in our process, that we harden our hearts to the voice of God for who He will have assume the key leadership role in our churches. The same could very easily happen with other positions in our church. I believe that this scripture today references an Old Testament example to not only show the Roman church to whom Paul was teaching, but also to show our churches today, that if we are blessed to participate in the ministry that God is doing through our church, then we had best seek His face, humble ourselves before Him, and wait for His direction on who it is that He would like to have on leadership, so that His work could be properly administered and become most effective before the lost world that enters our doors looking for answers from God. Our chosen ones may very easily become the stumbling block for someone entering our church to hear about Jesus. In our Bible story today, it was automatic for the oldest son to assume the leadership role in his family’s godly and community responsibilities. However we see where God had a different plan for the sons of Isaac and Rebekah. Friends, God’s plans far outwit our knowledge, foresight and judgment, for He knows the plans He has for us – plans that will bless us, and not harm us. Do we really want to interfere with that? Let’s be reminded by this, that for those of us that know Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have an Advocate, who cares and loves us enough to see His very best worked out in and through us. However, I believe that this will only occur when we invite Jesus to lead the way right from the beginning. Let’s not think for a moment that we could make our uneducated, unqualified decisions and then ask God to bless that. Instead, as we follow His lead and obey His commands, He will bless us in spite of how unqualified we feel the individuals are that we want to lead us. Can you do that friend? Can you put aside your personal agenda and let God have His way?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, have Thine own way in our lives, PLEASE? This means that we need to put our personal agendas aside and our pride and our false ideals of thinking that we have a clue about what needs to be done. There are decisions after decisions that we must make daily, but Lord we make those decisions based on our limited knowledge and foresight. You alone know what the future holds and how we may fit into the plan that You have for us and Your kingdom. Please touch us once again Heavelny Father. Draw us unto Yourself and align us within the boundaries of what You have in store for us and this unsaved world. May Your kingdom come oh Lord and may My readers and I be allowed the opportunity to serve in Your army to accomplish Your will. AMEN!

Be Sure To Elect The One The Lord Chooses

May I encourage you to get your spiritual ‘Nuggets’ to start your day off right? Pretty amazing that our awesome God would consider feeding even us with His Word! May I encourage you to read the whole devotional, and look for a blessing, friend!………

Today’s Bible Reference: Acts 1:23-26
Today’s Bible Text: 23 They put two men before the group. One was Joseph Barsabbas. He was also called Justus. The other man was Matthias. 24-25 They prayed, “Lord, you know the minds of all people. Show us which one of these two men you choose to do this work. Judas turned away from it and went where he belongs. Lord, show us which man should take his place as an apostle!” 26 Then they used lots to choose one of the two men. The lots showed that Matthias was the one the Lord wanted. So he became an apostle with the other eleven.
The Bible Translation: Easy-To-Read Version (ERV)

My Take Away: What if men chose church leaders like this today? What if Christians presented nominated officials for government offices in this way? In this example, the disciples had more than one man that they thought could fill the seat left empty by Judas, but they didn’t want to choose the man most favored by the apostles, nor did they want to choose the man who wanted the position most or the man who spoke the best in his bid for the position, but rather, they wanted to get their minds into the hearts of the men, and there was only one way possible to achieve this. They pleaded with God, who knows the hearts of all men, and who knows what that position would be faced with throughout its tenure, and therefore the best man to hold that office, with all things considered. Friends, may I remind you that this is still the case with our God today? He still knows who will be best suited for offices this year, and who will best lead His children into the times that He knows we must face. I would highly suggest that you read Romans 13 any time that you feel like the people may have messed up in electing our ruling officials. I believe that these verses serve to show us how important it is that we depend on God, the One who knows the hearts of those we will be asked to vote for. And while He may not choose to cleanse every heart of those nominated, I know that He will point us to the ‘Matthias’ that we must elect to serve God’s purpose in serving us over the next few years. Let us plead for clear minds to ask God; clear hearts to hear His will and direction; and sincerity and honesty to obey His perfect will in every election we have the privilege to vote in.

Prayer: Lord, we tend to vote for nominations purely on the premise of our personal views and desires, instead of seeking Your face and Your decision on who should be elected for such a time as this – whether it be in our churches, our city, our state or even our country. If we are to truly take part in electing the servants You desire for our churches or our cities, states or country, then we MUST learn to follow the example of the disciples in today’s scripture, and humbly put our selfish desires aside, and seek Your face. Thank You Father for being such an awesome and powerful God that can direct Your children beyond what appears to be the obvious in our minds, towards Your heart’s decision for our churches, cities, states and country. I believe that we will only succeed in electing Your chosen leaders as we seek Your face and know Your heart. We need You precious Savior. Please speak to Your children as we nominate and as we vote, for it’s in the name of Jesus that I ask, AMEN!

Concern, Impact and Action

May I encourage you to get your spiritual ‘Nuggets’ to start your day off right? Pretty amazing that our awesome God would consider feeding even us with His Word! May I encourage you to read the whole devotional, and look for a blessing, friend!………

Today’s Bible Reference: Nehemiah 1:3-7
Today’s Bible Text: 3 They said to me, “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”

4 When I heard this, I sat down and wept. In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of heaven. 5 Then I said,

“O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of unfailing love with those who love him and obey his commands, 6 listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned! 7 We have sinned terribly by not obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us through your servant Moses.
The Bible Translation: New Living Translation (NLT)

My Take Away: I want you to look at our scripture today in three  different, but important sections. In the blue font, vs. 3, lets consider that containing the concern of Nehemiah; In the purple font, vs. 4 let’s consider that the impact on Nehemiah; and in the green font, vs. 5-7, let’s consider that the action taken by Nehemiah. As we study this, I want to share with you how this challenged me in connection with the politics of our own country at this time. For those not in the USA, perhaps you might find an application for your particular situation.

The Concern: I believe that some of us may simply turn our heads to the concerns of our land, because we are afraid to become involved. We are so accustomed to segregating our job from the other person’s job, that we have become numb, or unconcerned about what is happening under someone else’s watch. Nehemiah wanted to know what was happening to his people so that he could be sure to do all within his power to improve their conditions.

The Impact: Perhaps we should open up ourselves to be impacted by our current conditions and/or our future. If things continue to deteriorate at the rate they are now happening, AND if our hearts are in gel with God and His Good Book, then I believe we will be brought to our knees in deep sorrow before God, our only hope. Throughout the Bible God has promised to love and care for His people who would choose to serve Him wholeheartedly.

The Action: If impacted, whether physically or emotionally, then we will be led to some very positive action. Of course, if a believer in Jesus Christ, then we will be forced to our knees in prayer before the Almighty God. Let me point out a few interesting things about Nehemiah’s prayer, as I believe that it could help us as we pray about such a major concern: Nehemiah took responsibility. He didn’t try to find someone to blame. Friends, when there’s sin in our house, let us be careful to seek personal forgiveness, before ever thinking about praying about the faults or shortcomings of our neighbor, or our government or our president. We must insure that they have something good to work with or work for, if we expect them to do a good job. If we had a godly leader/president, but an evil, sinful, ungodly people, what do you suppose they could accomplish for God? Nehemiah prayed that he and his people would obey God and His commands, not that the king would do better for them. Don’t you suppose that based on the experiences noted in God’s Word, that if we, the people, were to humble ourselves, seek God’s face, and pray for Him to make us more aligned with His commands, that perhaps then He would hear from heaven and heal our land? God’s Word said that He would do exactly this, just as He did in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

My wish is that we, the people, would spend more time seeking God’s face and listening closely to what He is teaching us in His Word, on how to be better aligned with Him, rather than making a fool of ourselves in trying to be politicians. Yes we should vote, but if we are closely aligned with God, then we will vote for the candidate that God wants in office to deliver the next round of events He has in store for us personally, and/or our state, and/or our country or even the world.

Prayer: Lord God, I believe that You spoke very clearly to Your servant Nehemiah, and after the above mentioned prayer He became a useful instrument in helping to improve life for his fellow citizens. Please help us to get beyond ourselves and to clearly understand how critical it is that we depend on You, especially during times of earthly challenges, such as politics. We are demanded to obey our government servants, as they were put in place by You for such a time as this. Please help us all to look beyond the debates and mud-slinging, and to seek Your guidance in all things. Thank You for loving us enough to help us through events such as elections. Only You know what tomorrow brings, so Lord we place ourselves and our decisions and our obligation to vote, in Your hands as we seek Your face and Your guidance. May Your perfect will be done, and may we be obedient to every part we take while here on earth. I ask these things in faith, and through the Son of God, Jesus the Christ, AMEN!

A Prayer For Our Leader and People

May I encourage you to get your spiritual ‘Nuggets’ to start your day off right? Pretty amazing that our awesome God would consider feeding even us with His Word! May I encourage you to read the whole devotional, and look for a blessing, friend!………

Today’s Bible Reference: Psalm 72:1-5
Today’s Bible Text: Teach the king to judge with your righteousness, O God; share with him your own justice, so that he will rule over your people with justice and govern the oppressed with righteousness. May the land enjoy prosperity; may it experience righteousness. May the king judge the poor fairly; may he help the needy
and defeat their oppressors. May your people worship you as long as the sun shines,
as long as the moon gives light, for ages to come.
The Bible Translation: The Good News Translation (GNT)

My Take Away: With this being a year of election for my country to elect a new president, I believe that while we must be diligent to vote for the one God directs us to as our next leader, we must also be diligent to read God’s Word about what is expected of us (Christians) before, during and after our elections. For interspersed throughout God’s Word we are cautioned in each of these areas. In this scripture today, King David is praying for the Israelites’ new king, his son Solomon. I believe that if we take note of David’s prayer, and acknowledge that God had very good intentions and reasons for placing this prayer as part of His Word, and endeavor to pray similarly for our leader, then perhaps our people will humble themselves and pray, and seek God’s face. Watch how this prayer is all about our leader and us, being more like God and placing Him in His place over us. David prayed:

  • That the king would judge with ‘righteousness’;
  • That he would rule/govern with the same justice and ‘righteousness’ experienced from God, especially to the poor and oppressed;
  • That as a result of the above the people would enjoy prosperity and ‘righteousness’;
  • That the king would judge the poor fairly and be willing to stand up to the oppressors;
  • That the people would never fail to worship God today and all the days to come.

Friends, as children of God, I believe we are called to be living witnesses of what our God expects of us. I have just listed some ways that we are taught to pray for our leader and for our people. What do you suppose would happen to our country if Christians chose to pray like God expects of us, and to do it on a regular basis? Let’s remember this year that we are called to be Christ followers first. Let’s not get so carried away with worldly politics that the unsaved lose total recognition to whom we truly belong. The unsaved is looking for what God has done in our lives, not how little difference there is between us and the world. We are to be ‘light’ in this world of ‘darkness’. Please example, teach and preach the Word of God, even during a time when the world around us is so caught up in, what often turns out to be, the hatred and evil of politics. Please remember that God loves all of his children, not just us and our look-a-likes!

Prayer: Lord God, may Your people be Your faithful and true people even during a very passionate time of placing what we believe to be the right person in leadership over our country. May we be so faithful in prayer, trying to ensure that we hear your voice clearly, that we will not have time to step into the filth and ugliness of earthly politics. We are Your ambassadors looking to win as many to the kingdom as possible. May we not lose sight of that mission in things we say, write or portray, especially this year. You loved us in spite of our sin, may we in turn, show that same love to all Your children, by staying on mission for You, and not allowing the political views of the world around us to divide us from, or distract us in, our mission for You. I ask these things in love and because I want You to be foremost in our lives at all times, Lord Jesus, even during a year of elections. AMEN!
