Wait On the Lord and Worship Him

SCRIPTURE FROM: Psalm 123:1-2
TRANSLATION: The Voice (VOICE)

BIBLE TEXT: I raise my eyes to fix my gaze on You, for Your throne resides in the heavens.
Just as the eyes of servants closely watch the hand of their masters,
Just as a maid carefully observes the slightest gesture of her mistress,
In the same way we look to You, Eternal One, waiting for our God to pour out His mercy upon us.

APPLICATION: Ever noticed that the things of this world tend to tug on our hearts in such a way that we become engrossed in more, more, more of its evil ways? Take for example politics – the more we sit and watch the hatred spread by opposing members of our political leaders, the angrier we become, and the more vindictive we become with those who oppose our views? The more we watch television, the easier it is for us to keep waiting for the next movie about to come on. Those same types of unfortunate attractions seem to impact us when we hear of squabbles involving close relatives, or church members. But for those who put their trust in the Lord, I believe that David set an excellent example for us to follow, and throughout the Psalms, he offered many examples of why and how we could reflect God in our everyday lives. Let’s stop the busyness of this new year long enough to peak in on what is being shared through Pslam 123 today. I read where one pastor gave good advice that might help us really take note of the words from the Psalmist: “Here is a real secret for me: I have found that if I look inward, I’ll be depressed. If I look outward, I’ll be distressed. But if I look up and fix my eyes on the Lord, I’ll be strengthened“. I found this so true as I review life today. So, let’s add to that what else we feel God might reveal through the inspired words of David:
=> Fix Our Gaze on The Lord – Many inspired writers in the Bible make reference to how their strength comes from God, the maker of heaven and earth. But where does mankind tend to look for help in getting them through the end a challenging day at work? What about when the pressure of life is hitting hard, where do we tend to turn for help? Isn’t it sad that even Christians tend to try everywhere else, before they finally surrender to God and seek His help, His guidance and to soak in His love? Step aside from the ways of the world and the stress that Satan tends to create in us when he pushes us towards his vices and his sinful answers to life. Strive to gaze on the Lord, worship Him, and wait for His direction.
=> Watch for God’s every move – I love the way that a few translations compare this to a slave watching for the gestures of his/her master. I am often blessed beyond anything I deserve, when I reflect on the many ways that God has worked in my life! Going through situations of life, it sometimes seems like there is no hope, and perhaps not worth living, if tomorrow will only bring more of today’s troubles. However, for the child of God who knows where their strength comes from, it is vitally important that we study and obey God’s commands, and stay true to our commitment to Him, for He cares for us and will not lead us astray. Even when the next move seems impossible, or if questionable to us, keep trusting God and watch for His every move as He guides you through, what He knows to be, the very best for you.
=> Seek His mercy – Why? You might ask. When you have done everything that this evil world presents to you, even those things that you are convinced that God would not approve of, what do you suppose you deserve from God? My friend, it is only through the grace of God, and because of His tender mercies, that He still looks on us in love and draws us to Himself. His mercy is everlasting, and because He loves and cares for us, He will extend mercy to us when we seek His forgiveness and His power to overcome sin.
Let me remind you friend, that none of the three items that I elaborated today can be aided by our friends, nor would they be forgiving enough to try and help. Only the God who created us can see the true value in us and love us anyway. Only God will give us second chances to face the challenges of this world like His child and be the best representatives like He deserves. Show them the ways of God and express His love through everything you say or do. Let them see Jesus!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: We serve an awesome God who is willing to forgive us of our sin and instead empower us to walk in His ways. so that the world might know He lives and reigns on high!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I surrender all to You and worship You for the awesome God that You are. I want to be just like You, Lord, but I need Your strength and Your power to overcome the world. Please continue to bless and empower as only You can. Please forgive us in our lack of commitment and the failure of obedience that ensues every day. Teach us Lord to walk in Your footsteps every day, not just those days when we really need to hear from You on a problem that’s bugging us and is much bigger than anything we could handle alone. The sad eyeopener is that others are impacted by our responses to life’s encounters, but way too often our response has nothing to do with Your teachings or Your commands. I know that we were not saved to soak and sour, but rather to let our lights shine for the glory of God. Please Lord, guide us to be everything that You desire of us. May Your kingdom increase, and may it become a better place to live because of the hope that we have, and the part that we play in it in representing You. AMEN!

How To Pray for Other Churches

DATE POSTED Wednesday, 2023-01-04
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Colossians 1:9-12
TRANSLATION: Living Bible (TLB)

BIBLE TEXT: … ever since we first heard about you we have kept on praying and asking God to help you understand what he wants you to do; asking him to make you wise about spiritual things; 10 and asking that the way you live will always please the Lord and honor him, so that you will always be doing good, kind things for others, while all the time you are learning to know God better and better. 11 We are praying, too, that you will be filled with his mighty, glorious strength so that you can keep going no matter what happens—always full of the joy of the Lord, 12 and always thankful to the Father who has made us fit to share all the wonderful things that belong to those who live in the Kingdom of light.

APPLICATION: Not sure about you, but I am very uncomfortable when pastors and/or teachers and/or church members choose to beat up on another church, in order to promote how good, they are. God allowed Paul to share with us how we are to think of others who are on the same team as us. Think about it, children of God have the same Father, and in using the same Bible, we are all working towards achieving the same goals with the same end in mind. We all want to please our Father in every way that we could, as we each want the rewards promised to us at the end of this life here on earth. Because believers in Jesus Christ live by the same Book of Instruction (the Bible), then I believe that we could settle on the fact that every word included in that precious Book is God-inspired, and serves the specific purpose of directing our path under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So, let’s look into today’s Scripture with these precepts in mind. I want to draw your attention to the following:
=> Notice the group that was addressed – Throughout the books written by Paul, we could see his heart especially for the churches he was instrumental in starting. But in this case, Paul is addressing a church that he never visited. For those of you that attend your church’s Prayer Meetings, how many churches are you praising and giving thanks for, that you never heard about? Imagine telling your church, or your prayer group that you are praising God for the work of a group that is shaking the world and community all around them. Don’t you think that your group will probably look at you and question, ‘but what about us’?
=> Notice the items Paul prayed for: 1). That God would help the church understand what He wants from them. Verses 3-6 are filled with descriptions of the great qualities of the group. I believe that when God sees His children willing and ready to bless their neighborhoods and bring them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, then He will not hold back the gifts for them to use, nor the opportunities for them to bless others. 2). That God would make them wise about Spiritual things. When the people sees that it’s them you are wanting to bless and encourage, and not that you are just in ministry for personal gain, or reasons, then I have no doubt that they would accept you and begin to trust you. 3). That the way you live will always demonstrate the God that you serve. To do this, Paul promised to pray that God will fill them with wisdom to seek Him out and to grow in His love and favor so much that it would overflow into the hearts and lives of those they were ministering to. 4). That they would always be filled with God’s mighty and glorious strength that would enable them to love others and minister to them from a heart filled with joy and peace, not of tiredness and a feeling of being overly exhausted. 5). That he (Paul) and his co-laborers would be thankful and excited about God using the church at Colossae to spread His joy. Paul probably knew that when a people show God their availability, He would give them miraculous abilities to spread the Good News to all in their families, church body, town, region and indeed all the world.
I believe that the bottom line to Paul’s encouraging letter is to remind us that it takes all of our churches to reach all of the people for Jesus Christ. And that we are to consider that church down the road, or on the other side of town, as co-laborers working together in one common goal. It’s not a competition, nor is it a work for just the rich and the elite. This ministry is a ‘God thing’ and only His children – all of His children working together, that will touch the hearts of all people. At work you wouldn’t think twice about have a meeting to encourage one another, cheer on the teams from every department, and encourage them towards the common goal of success of our business. Let’s vow to do the same thing in the family of God, whether they are at our church, or just in the global ‘CHURCH’ serving and ministering on the other side of the world.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: I believe that God sees His work as something we do because of our love for Him, not because of who our pastor us, how we interpret the written Word of God, how big our church is, nor how much extra money we need each week to meet our budget. It’s about God, and we all are His workers in the field as one beggar trying to share a morsel of food with another beggar. Let’s get over ourselves and see God magnified, people saved, and the body of Christ on fire for the growth of His kingdom!

PRAYER: Lord, there is such joy when we kneel beside a fellow believer from a totally different community, church or body of Christ! Such a rejoicing when we can stand and worship You as one people when we attend a Christian concert and meet with believers from every faith, city, or nation! I believe these things are evident because it gives us a glimpse into what heaven will be like! Thank You Lord for the life and work of Paul, and for the ministry he left behind through his written words. As Your children read these encouraging words of Paul, may we place them in our hearts, and may our spirit be so uplifted and encouraged, that we will determine in our own hearts to celebrate with co-laborers in the ministry all over the world. Please lead us to a body of believer who need encouraging and who must be reminded of their worth in the work of the global church everywhere man is found. AMEN!

Jesus Cares For You

DATE POSTED Tuesday, 2023-01-03

SCRIPTURE FROM: Luke 7:12-14
TRANSLATION: The Passion Translation (TPT)

BIBLE TEXT: 12As he approached the village, he met a multitude of people in a funeral procession, who were mourning as they carried the body of a young man to the cemetery. The boy was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow. 13When the Lord saw the grieving mother, his heart broke for her.  With great tenderness he said to her, “Please don’t cry.” 14Then he stepped up to the coffin and touched it. When the pallbearers came to a halt, Jesus spoke directly to the corpse, “Young man, I say to you, arise and live!”

APPLICATION: Research shows that Jesus, and the crowd following Him, went out of their way by 25 miles for Him to be available for this poor widow in her time of loss. That tells me that the Father had a very important appointment for His Son, Jesus. In our minds, I believe I can safely say that we would do anything to avoid a detour of 25 miles by automobile today. For as little walking as many do today, I believe we would squirm if we were asked to go an extra city block to get to our destination! So, imagine walking an extra 25 miles, and then to meet up with a funeral procession. But, I don’t believe there was any coincidence to Jesus meeting the procession just outside the gate of Nain. The Prince of Life was about to enter the gate of the city when death came out. There at the gates where life and death meet, life wins and death is defeated. Just outside of Jerusalem one day, death and life met again, and life won forevermore – praise the Lord! But why was it important for Jesus to console this poor widow and help to rectify her position of losing her last relative? You know, I believe it was not only for the purpose of winning the heart of that mother, but can you even imagine the awe and excitement of the crowd when the saw something that had, no doubt, never happened before in their lifetime – a young man being carried to his gravesite just sat up and began talking after an encounter with the King of all kings? Furthermore, how many times have you given up hope because you just couldn’t imagine Jesus finding time to respond to your prayer request or to feel your pain? Is it not clear that Jesus wants us to see that He not only gave up His life for us on Calvary, but because He rose again, He is forever available to us for whatever needs we may bring to Him? Please don’t confuse your trivial requests for things that might align you with the rich guy down the road, I’m talking about the things of the heart. To the saved, let me assure you that as you endeavor to live each day more closely aligned with your Master – Jesus Christ, you will want to do those things that He exampled for you while He was here on earth, and you will want to learn more about God’s Word so that you can validate that you are following His will for your life. To love someone and desire to live life pleasing to them, then you are more than willing to do what they say – plus some, and you will want to do what they ask of you, because you know that pleases them. You will love them unconditionally, which means that you will love them, even if it seems like they may not always return that love in the ways you demand or wish, but because you know they love you. That’s Jesus, my friend! To the unsaved – I’m not so sure that You could appreciate the grace and mercy of my Lord, but I hope that you have experienced one more example of how He has unbelievable compassion for His children, as he did for the grieving mother in our story today. You won’t find this kind of compassion in your circle of unsaved loved ones, but this may be perhaps this might just be the right opportunity for you to meet my Savior, accept Him as your Lord, and commit your life to Him for all eternity. Please read my Footnote carefully, as I have shared with you several avenues for help, should you need it in turning your back on the world and instead accepting Jesus as Lord.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Jesus went a long way out of His way to comfort a grieving widow. I am reassured that He would do the same for me!

PRAYER: Thank You Jesus for showing us how to love. Thanks for helping us to see how Your heart was broken when You saw the broken heart of the grieving widow, and how You brought life back into her son. These are all things that are beyond our understanding, but Lord You alone are merciful and loving in such an unconditional manner. Teach us Lord to follow in Your example, so that people will see Jesus, understand Your love, and know that You will overcome many obstacles, if need be, to show Your love towards them. AMEN!

Your Level of Faith

DATE POSTED Monday, 2023-01-02
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Luke 7:6-7; 9-10;
TRANSLATION: The Voice (VOICE)

BIBLE TEXT: So Jesus accompanied them. When they approached the Centurion’s home, the Centurion sent out some friends to bring a message to Jesus.
Message of the Centurion: Lord, don’t go to the trouble of coming inside. I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. That’s why I sent others with my request. Just say the word, and that will be enough to heal my servant.
Jesus was deeply impressed when He heard this. He turned to the crowd that followed Him.
Jesus: Listen, everyone. This outsider, this Roman, has more faith than I have found even among our own Jewish people.
10 The friends of the Centurion returned home, and they found the slave was completely healed.

APPLICATION: Unless we focus on the main lesson in today’s Scripture, we may drift off into wondering why the Centurion didn’t go to Jesus himself. Or why didn’t Jesus pronounce the healing as soon as He received word from the Centurion, for surely, He knew how dire the situation was. But let’s not forget to place ourselves in the shoes of the Centurion. Who are we that we would send friends to the highest religious order of our day and ask that he drop what he’s doing and rush on over to our house? What type of palace do we live in, that we would open the door and invite the Lord Jesus in? Inside our home, is everything in place to impress Jesus with our religious stand? Of all the people in the world who need help from Jesus, who are we that He would consider listening, or responding, to us? Friends, regardless of your answers to these questions, or even if this prompted more questions from you, notice that the Centurion still took action. Many will sit, waiting for their ship to come in, but if you didn’t send one out, why should you expect one to come in? Perhaps the Centurion felt unworthy, just as he said, but he may have also wanted to stay close to his servant, just in case the situation worsened. So many questions, and so many excuses we could conjure up to excuse our inaction, but the Centurion moved into action and asked his respected leaders to make the journey and ask Jesus, on his behalf. Of particular interest is the fact that even though Centurions were looked down on by the Jews, yet Jesus responded to the request of this Centurion when He first received the request, and again when the second message arrived asking Jesus to heal the servant remotely. My primary take-away in this story is that Jesus openly shared how amazed He was at the faith of this humble, caring man. In fact, He gave him the designation of being so filled with faith, that he put it into action for someone else. I believe that many of my readers and listeners are regular church attendees. Let me encourage you to meditate on this Scripture long enough to do a self-evaluation of your faith. Knowing that you can do nothing to impress Jesus, what do you suppose He would say about your level of faith? Do you suppose that your faith is strong enough that you would have attempted something like the Centurion did? If not, what do you suppose you need to help you grow in your faith? Jesus is not out of reach, dear friends. He loved you enough to hang on a cross and die for your sins. He loves you enough that He said that He has gone to be with the Father to prepare a place in Heaven for us, so that where He is, we may be also. Surely, He is more than ready to hear our cry for help, and also willing to heal – even from a distance, like He did for the Centurion’s servant. Trust Him, and call on Him, for He cares for you!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: The Jews looked down on the Centurions, but Jesus listened to the cry from His precious child and answered his request. Others may look down on us, but we are number one in the eyes of our Master and Lord!

PRAYER: Lord, we are amazed by Your respect for all Your children, and Your willingness to accept all of Your creation, even those we may turn our noses up at. Thank You for hearing my plea and accepting me as Your child. Just as the Centurion found peace in getting a message to You about His dire need, my readers, listeners and myself know that each and every day will bring new challenges that we will need to call on You for. None on earth are truly righteous, but Lord I pray that You will continue to teach us to call on You for each and every need, or concern of our lives. Some on earth may dismiss us because we are not rich enough, or the partying kind, or we go to church too much, but I truly believe that when You forgave our sin, and accepted us into Your kingdom, we became true sons and daughters of the Most High God. Forgive us Lord when we listen to Satan and cower in our corner. Please give us the confidence so deserving of Your child and the boldness to call on You for the little and impossible things of life. You are God, and besides You there is no other. We acknowledge that today and wait for the time when You will call us home to glory! AMEN!

None Found To Compare With You

DATE POSTED Sunday, 2023-01-01
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: 2 Kings 23:24-25
TRANSLATION: The Message (MSG)

BIBLE TEXT: 24 Josiah scrubbed the place clean and trashed spirit-mediums, sorcerers, domestic gods, and carved figures—all the vast accumulation of foul and obscene relics and images on display everywhere you looked in Judah and Jerusalem. Josiah did this in obedience to the words of God’s Revelation written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in The Temple of God. 25 There was no king to compare with Josiah—neither before nor after—a king who turned in total and repentant obedience to God, heart and mind and strength, following the instructions revealed to and written by Moses. The world would never again see a king like Josiah.

APPLICATION: Just in case you might read today’s Scripture and shrug it off as not being applicable to our modern world, I believe we should look at a few things very carefully and ask God to open our eyes to what all is going on around us. You see, king Josiah saw the following things that just didn’t seem like God was in them. I will expand how I see similar parallels today:
=> The king scrubbed the place clean – How many things to you see and/or hear on television that you cringe at, or if minors are in the room, you may even mute the TV? How much more will you tolerate the employee who thinks nothing of cursing or verbal abuse at work? You can clean that up, you know. At 8 years of age Josiah became king. I would have thought that his young mind would be swayed by everything he heard from adults around him. But the Bible says that the king was determined to please God in everything he did. Are you? In a recent sermon, I was reminded that in the things we say or do, we will either please God, or Satan. What a reminder.
=> The king trashed spirit-mediums – oh yes, we have these. They even advertise their business on public television now. What will it take for us to obey God’s Word and rid our communities and our nation from this wicked profession that God spoke against in His Word?
=> The king trashed all the vast accumulation of foul and obscene images – In the name of financial gain and free will, not all towns in our country are the same as ours. Some actually allow billboards and mobile billboards that advertise prostitution. Some stand idly by while prostitutes walk the streets and hand out ‘business’ cards. In the name of equal rights and free speech, public schools are now allowing satanists clubs. How many of these things that I mentioned do you suppose may have gotten trashed by king Josiah?
Friends, this bold move by this young king did not win him a popularity contest. It was different to anything the world experienced before him, and after him. No, not even to our president has shown the boldness to follow in Josiah’s example, how about yours? However, I strongly believe that if we were to individually determine in our heart to call on God for mercy, and strength to endure being different, as we stand up for all that our God taught us and exampled before us while here on earth, then perhaps we will begin to see more Josiahs, and ultimately see God’s handiwork through His committed saints. Remember, greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world! I believe that God placed this story before us today to impress upon us that we serve an awesome God, and if we are serious about being His representatives here on earth, then we must be willing to stand firm in our beliefs and not be idle while Satan makes his move in the world around us.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: It may be challenging for others to follow, if you simply obey the Word of God and be willing to stand up for your beliefs!

PRAYER: Lord, I believe that many leaders are still choosing to ignore Your commands – probably so they could remain popular with the people in giving them what they want. But thank You Father for working miraculously through king Josiah, for through obedience to You, Josiah was able to clean up a lot of the sin that served to set his kingdom backwards. This is still a very real problem today, Lord, for sin is rampant and Satan is having a field day – so much so that it is having awful impacts on Your children also. Please Lord, help us to take note of Josiah and the position he took, even though it was very unpopular in his day. We need to see more of our leaders take this stand today, Lord. Please help us to elect leaders who are willing to submit to Your will, then, beginning with our leader in the USA, touch his heart and draw him unto Yourself. Please spread Your joy to all the world leaders, especially those countries who are represented in my readership. You created us, and You have a place prepared for those of us who have accepted Your Lordship. Until it’s time to take us home, please touch our leaders so that our time here on earth will be more tolerable. Continue to speak to the heart of the lost, so they will once again be drawn to You, as their Savior and Lord. AMEN!

Here’s Your Source of Strength for 2023

SCRIPTURE FROM: Psalm 121:1-4
TRANSLATION: The Voice (VOICE)

BIBLE TEXT: I look up at the vast size of the mountains – from where will my help come in times of trouble?
The Eternal Creator of heaven and earth and these mountains will send the help I need. He holds you firmly in place;
He will not let you fall. He who keeps you will never take His eyes off you and never drift off to sleep. What a relief! …

APPLICATION: When sickness comes our way, we look for a doctor’s office, or even a hospital. When financial difficulties become evident, we tend to look for a banker. When businesses look at opening a new store in an area, they gather tons of analytical data, history of businesses in that area, the growth state of the population in that area, and they make assumptions about the future, based on past data. Is that what we should do as a new year dawns? Isn’t there a good chance that, based on past experience, the new year will come with its own set of challenges that are totally unknown to humans? So how does one prepare for that? Some might tell you that the mountains are huge, so why not go to the mountains and ask for a word. But David encouraged us to not stop there, for you could have a one-on-one conversation with the God who created the mountain, then you could ask Him! Some might advise that you go and see the Pastor of that huge church just down the road, get his advice, or have him pray for you, so that your eyes might be opened to the events ahead that you should prepare for. But since that Pastor goes to sleep on a regular basis, David encouraged us to seek out the God who created that Pastor, and who never goes to sleep. In fact, as you interact with God and enjoy relationship with Him, you will find that He always watches out for you, no matter what circumstances come your way. So, what is there to worry about? Yes, God may allow you to enter into a new year in a few hours, but isn’t there a lot to sit and worry over? Dear friends, I believe that God placed this Scripture right in our face for a very specific purpose today. After all, why worry about something, when we’ve been promised by the supreme God, the One who created heaven and earth, the mountains and even our own bodies, that He would take extra care in: keeping watch over us, directing our path, loving us unconditionally, and preparing a place in Heaven just for us? That’s a sure thing Brothers and Sisters! That’s something that we could ‘go to the bank with’! Remember, if you know Jesus as your personal Savior, and you worry, then you are basically saying to Him that you don’t trust Him at His word. Let me encourage you to enter into daily communion with Jesus Christ. Talk to Him in prayer – in your own personal words, as He wants to hear what’s on your heart. Listen for His instructions as you read His word each day. To have a relationship, it takes 2-way communication, and Jesus is quite capable of speaking for Himself as You attune yourself to His instructions in His Word. You’ve seen the bumper stickers ‘Jesus is my co-pilot’. Let me encourage you to enter 2023 with Jesus as your ‘pilot’. Only go where He directs and when He says so. Only speak what He leads you to say. Be obedient to His written instructions found in your very own Bible. Spend personal devotional time with the Lord every day – reading His Word and conversing with Him in prayer. Spouses learn so much about each other that they could finish each other’s sentences. Imagine it you could have that kind of relationship with Jesus in 2023!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: God created such vast and mighty things, but in the lives of simple humans, God is seeking relationship! With God as our ‘Pilot’ in 2023, we are in good hands!

PRAYER: Lord, I believe that we are on Your mind every day, just as we were when You hung on the cross at Calvary sacrificing Your life for the redemption of our sin. I also believe that You would never give up on us, especially after such a sacrifice. Please draw us to the cross each day, where we may be reminded of Your unconditional love, and Your supreme power. Having no idea what 2023 holds for us, yet we are confident that we can do ALL THINGS through Christ who strengthens us. Knowing that You will never leave us or forsake us, please give us strength and stamina to remain faithful as You hold our hand and guide us through the upcoming year. May each day be filled with obvious signs of Your presence, Your love, and Your overwhelming power over all things. Please continue to work miraculously in the hearts of those who are undecided about their eternal destiny, for we know that no decision on their part, leaves them with a destiny of Hell. You proved Your love for us, so that we could avoid Hell, if we accept You as Lord and Savior. Please Lord, send a revival in 2023 that will reopen the eyes of the church – Your children, and also continue to speak intently to the stubborn hearts of the unsaved, that their eyes would finally be opened to the hope that lies in knowing You personally. AMEN!

The Challenges of Being A Role Model

DATE POSTED Friday, 2022-12-30
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Philippians 4:8-9
TRANSLATION: Living Bible (TLB)

BIBLE TEXT: …… Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about. Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and saw me doing, and the God of peace will be with you.

APPLICATION: Perhaps the greatest challenge for us as we consider the example set for us by Paul, is that we never know when someone is following in our footsteps, for many of the things we do are instinctively said or done form the content of our heart. I have 2 examples to share with you that might help you better tune in to this challenge from Paul: 1). Several couples and I were spending a weekend together. The challenge was given for everyone to get up early enough on Sunday morning to attend church together. The end result was that only the women joined me in attending church. Because of this, no children accompanied us. Later that day as we were gathered all together in one room, and I challenged the fathers to be spiritual leaders in their homes and take their families to church each week. The children sat quietly as I made my challenge, and several were even on electronic devices. However, at a later date one set of parents were discussing in the car whether they would go to church the following day. The child in the back seat pops up and shares the words that I had challenged the dad with some weeks earlier! Were the followers listening and then ready to accept the challenge? You bet ‘cha! 2). I had a relative coming to spend the weekend with my wife and me. My wife told him to not forget his church clothes. To which he responded, I went and bought a shirt with a color, so that I could dress like my uncle for church! Not only were we enthused over the effort put forth, but I had never realized that my dress code was anything special. Obviously, someone was watching! Friends, Paul shows us in this challenge today that his followers stood at a point in their life where they would go on without him in it, and they had to make a choice on whether they would apply what they learned from him, or resort back to their original way of life. We too have this same challenge in knowing that 2023 will occur within hours. Will it be just ‘more of the same’ for us, or are we using this as a steppingstone to enter into a New Year, changed by the words, actions and experiences of 2022? I am convinced that if we act on the simple message taught by Paul, God will smile at the changes He sees next year! Think about it:
=> Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right.
=> Fix your thoughts on things that are pure and lovely.
=> Dwell on the fine, good things in others.
=> Dwell on everything you can praise God for.
=> Choose to be glad about life, and the things mentioned before this.
=> Put into practice all you learned from followers of Christ and saw them doing.
Oh, that we would live in such a way that we can say to others what Paul said to his followers in that very last sentence. We must be determined to live differently to the world, and live the example set forth for us by our Lord Jesus Christ, and His faithful saints. Without that determination, we are left at the mercy of every wind of change, every move of Satan and all the evil that serves to turn us away from God.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul reminds us that if we follow the design of God, learn from His Word and obey His commands, then the peace of God will be with us. I have no greater desire than to know the peace of God is with me today and every day!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, teach us to live as honored examples of You, and in a way that others will see Jesus in and through us. Lord, I want Your perfect will in my life, and I want to do Your will in every aspect of my life. Take control Lord, teach me Your ways, give me boldness to obey, and a desire to live every day following Your will, even if it is totally contrary to that of the world in which I live. As I reflect on 2022, may I see the areas of my life that require attention and more dedication to align with Your will. As the New Year comes, may it not only bring new opportunities to let Your light shine through me, but may I also feel closer to You than ever before, and may that reflect in every word, deed and attitude. Lord, there are many in my circle of family and friends who show no evidence of knowing You or reflecting an attitude of what might be Your will for their lives. May this New Year bring renewed desires to find You, experience You, and reflect Your will for our lives, so that unbelievers would see and experience the love of Jesus, even while still here on earth. AMEN!

Saying The Right Thing

DATE POSTED Thursday, 2022-12-29
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Luke 6:44-45
TRANSLATION: New International Version (NIV)

BIBLE TEXT: 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

APPLICATION: In the technical arena we tend to say about the quality of computer data: ‘garbage in, garbage out’! I believe that children and adults are the same way, for if your child is given the opportunity at a very young age to hear calm and satisfying reading, quality teachings and people around them that care about, and love them, then I believe that they will have a chance at success in their personal lives, and their education – that often leads to success in their relationships, their workplace and their circle of friends. Jesus knew that His children would be easily swayed by Satan and that it may often come through the friends we make that load up our ‘bucket’ (heart) with hatred, revenge and paybacks that are not pleasing to our Father, nor does it conform with His teachings. I believe that today we are challenged by our Father to consider a few things:
1. Based of the fruit others see, what type of tree will the world identify us as? Will they find enough evidence to convict us of being aligned with our Master and Lord – a Christian?
2. If our bucket (heart) is filled with the teachings of Christ and looks like the example He set for us, will our fruit, or our character show such things as love – even to those who refuse to love us? Will they see mercy, even if we feel deep inside that the person doesn’t deserve it? Will they see grace, because they see our humility and forgiveness even towards those who aim at showing us up, or attempting to destroy our character?
Dear friends, I am prompted to look closer at what I fill my heart with each day, and I would sincerely suggest that you do the same. For, from that input, we are filling our hearts with values that we will draw from in our speech, our attitude and our actions. Jesus wants us to look like, act like and speak like Him so that the unsaved will see evidence of His existence in our lives. If you fall short in achieving this ideal, then you may need to join me in seeking God’s help – daily. We all have a purpose here on earth. May our purpose always be so surrendered to Jesus Christ, that He will ensure that the world sees Jesus, and not the old person we used to be.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: God knows how unfaithful we are in filling our heart with His love and instruction each day, yet He is patient in working on us to change our ways and commit ourselves to Him more fully. Praise God for our loving Savior – the One that we serve!

PRAYER: Lord, I pray that first and foremost we will be recognized by our Father as one of His own. Help us to never grow so stagnant in our faith that the world loses sight of who You are. Please teach us daily to depend on You – as a constant reminder of how important you are to us and how we can’t live a day without You. May You become such a valued presence in our lives that it will be virtually impossible to look on us without seeing the work of the Holy Spirit working in and through us. Some may never enter the church doors, but as the church operates in the world, may it be evident to the unsaved that the Holy Spirit is at work within us, drawing the lost to its Shepherd – the Great I Am – the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. All glory to You dear Lord, today and always! AMEN!

Willing To Break the Norm

DATE POSTED Monday, 2022-12-24
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: 2 Kings 21:1-3
TRANSLATION: New Living Translation (NLT)

BIBLE TEXT: Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. His mother was Hephzibah. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, following the detestable practices of the pagan nations that the Lord had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites. He rebuilt the pagan shrines his father, Hezekiah, had destroyed. He constructed altars for Baal and set up an Asherah pole, just as King Ahab of Israel had done. He also bowed before all the powers of the heavens and worshiped them.

APPLICATION: Surely one of the hardest jobs of parents (myself included), is to raise up a child in the way that helped us to be successful in our own lives. For as soon as we open the door and allow them into the community, whether at church, or school, or with friends, they are exposed to other principles, and they must then decide whether they will adopt their friends’ principles, or to continue following what they are taught at home. This is the challenge that I believe many of David’s generation were faced with, and it may have been the deciding factor in helping them chose the course of their reign. To please our parents, we tend to lift them up and earn their love and respect. To please our friends, we tend to not only earn their respect and admiration, but we gain a sense of being accepted, and possibly being popular among our friends. However, when we learn what pleases God, and we commit to following His commands, we will learn such commands as obeying our parents in the Lord. This was so important to God, that He followed the command with the promise of a reward – that our days may be long on earth. But for those parents who are meditating on this devotional, and perhaps nodding your head in agreement, thank you! However, let me also remind you that children thrive on understanding why we make certain requirements of them, and they do better in obeying when they understand why they are being asked to do something. Are you, yourself, in the Word every day and making every effort to obey the commands of God? Are you sharing your learning from the Word with your children? Do they know that honoring their parents is actually a command of God, and not just something you feel compelled to demand of them out of respect to you? It is so important for us to not only practice what says the Word the God, but to also teach our children from a very early age what God commands of them. The Bible reassures us that if we do this, and even if they stray from the Truth in their later years, yet the Word will be implanted in them and prompting them to listen to God’s correction, and His will for their lives. In the case of Manessah’s father, king Hezikiah, he received word from God that he was about to die (2 Kings 20:1), but in spite of his sin, he remembered that God was still on the throne in heaven, and he pleaded for an extension of his life from God. Although Manessah still chose to do what was evil in the eyes of God, can’t you imagine that somewhere in the back of his mind, he must have known that you can’t declare evil in the face of a holy God and get away with it? I believe that’s how our kids are. They may stray from the Truth, but deep inside they know that they are dishonoring God, and they will personally pay for their sin. How then do we help them become stronger, bolder in their commitment, and different from the rest – if that’s what it takes to stay in the center of God’s will? Of course, this might cause them to be different to what they see as the norm; what they have seen practiced by others in similar position to themselves, and in spite of all the recommendations pushed at them by the world. But remember, the God you know is much bigger, stronger, caring and more loving than any of the forces working on your children. To honor God, and to be a child following His example, will look much different to the ‘norm’, but it will be the right way if we are pleasing Almighty God. Those of us connected to God and have a personal relationship with His Son, have a direct connection to the throne of grace. In prayer, let us seek the face of God on behalf of those we love who need redirection and/or correction. Let us pray, dear friends!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: God still answers the heart cry of those who seek Him, like He did for Hezehiah. I believe that God also watches as rebels do their own thing instead of following the example and teachings of our heavenly Lord. Oh, that we would strive to help those who choose to disobey God.

PRAYER: Lord, when we accepted Jesus as our Savior, we showed the world that we were willing to ‘break the norm’, stop following in the ways of the world and instead follow You and obey Your commands. This becomes easier said than done, at times, and while we must first and foremost ask that You please help us achieve a consistent walk with You, even more so, we need Your help in offering support and prayer for our children and for those we come into contact with who struggle in their walk with You. It’s easy for us to look down on folk, as in the case of king Manessah that we read about today. But just as many prayed, and no doubt are continuing to pray, for us today, please give us the desire to also pray for others instead of seeking out their faults and failures. Help us Lord to love others enough to want to lift them up in prayer. AMEN!

How To Find Real Peace

DATE POSTED Saturday, 2022-12-24
WRITTEN AT: O’Brien, FL

SCRIPTURE FROM: Philippians 4:6-7
TRANSLATION: Living Bible (TLB)

BIBLE TEXT: Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.

APPLICATION: Having come from a very small town, I know what it’s like to hear no sirens, seldom hear a car horn, or wonder where the loud music is coming from that would deafen the ears of sensitive residents. But then, I’ve experienced ‘big city’ teenagers, who would rather not visit my small, quiet, hometown and would rather the noise, excitement and rush of the neighboring big city! But whatever your preference is in regard to the above, I believe we all reach a stage at times where we’ve had enough and would rather enjoy peace and quiet, to allow our minds to settle down! Interestingly enough, that’s not what prompted Paul to share the advice in these verses we are studying today. Two individuals were at odds with each other, and Paul had just shared his heart-felt wishes with them about reconciling their differences. Paul then pleaded with his co-workers in the ministry to also pray and help him to resolve the differences of these ladies. Often, when differences and arguments result from certain behaviors, it is often easy for others to see what went wrong in their lives, and then try to apply the corrective principles to our own lives, to help them avoid trouble that may disrupt the fellowship. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul knew that there are a few things that often lead to troublesome relationships with each other, so he gave us a few pointers to help us avoid the same:
–> Don’t worry – I believe that the answer to this, is to have perfect peace in the Lord Jesus Christ. Learn to take your burdens to Him; Listen to His instruction; Obey His commands and His guidance; and Practice imitating His time on earth with us.
–> Pray – This is conversation with God. When you pray to a wall, everything you say, stays at that spot and nothing happens in response to your prayer needs. But that’s not how conversation with God works. Learn to share with Him your deepest burdens. But most importantly, learn to wait, and listen for His still small voice in response to your concerns. This might be through a Bible verse that suddenly comes to mind, or through a Scripture that you are reading as a part of your daily time in the Word. Or He may choose to answer you through another believer who knows nothing about your situation. Yes, tell Jesus your concerns, but unless you listen for His miraculous response, you may have done nothing but get a concern off your chest.
–> Tell God your needs – Let’s try not to confuse this with a formal meeting with God where He would ask you ‘what’s wrong?’. Remember, God is omnipresent. He’s there when you wreck your car; when you lose a loved one; when your boss comes down on you. As an example, I had an employee approach me one time in the absence of her pastor who was out of town. Her request was way over my head, so at my desk I simply whispered ‘Lord, please give me Your words’. I’m sure He heard my need and gave me the words I needed to share with His daughter.
–> With a thankful heart – To understand what this means, stop and think how you would respond to a situation when you’re mad, or when you’re upset or frustrated. A thankful heart will acknowledge all that God has already blessed you with, and it will cause you to ask from a heart that acknowledges only God can honor your request.
Friends, I sincerely believe that as we strive to live like God tells us to in His Word, and as He teaches us throughout His Word, and with the power and love of the one true God, then, and only then, will we experience true peace in our hearts, in our lives, and all around us, until He returns or takes us home to glory!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Real peace comes from the God of peace – our father who art in heaven. Oh, that we would experience that kind of peace this Christmas and every day of 2023.

PRAYER: Dearest Lord Jesus, only You can fill our hearts with peace when the world disrupts our lives and causes us to stress over every little thing. Please calm us with Your assurance and with Your promises. You alone can settle the minds of those You created, regardless of the stress we encounter here on earth. Thank You for giving Your servant Paul the words to encourage us with, and please give us the boldness and strength we need to overcome earthly distractions and concentrate ourselves on loving and serving You – the Author and Finisher of our faith. Perhaps today this may be the fix for those who chose to ignore Your invitation but may agree to listen to the experience of how we found peace while still here on earth. AMEN!
