A Prayer For Help In Times of Disaster

I truly love the passion of David, the Psalmist, who in spite of the many challenges thrown at him, he always turned to God for His help and direction. The words I bolded in verse 1 spoke so vividly to me today, and I hope that as you meditate on the Word you will also receive comfort and a deep sense of calm in knowing that under the wing of our Savior, we are untouchable by the world and/or its innumerable challenges that it throws at us.

SCRIPTURE FROM: Psalm 57:1-3
TRANSLATION: Good News Translation (GNT)

BIBLE TEXT: Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, because I come to you for safety. In the shadow of your wings I find protection until the raging storms are over.
I call to God, the Most High, to God, who supplies my every need. He will answer from heaven and save me; he will defeat my oppressors. God will show me his constant love and faithfulness

APPLICATION: Watch a child, especially when they are frightened; they will look for, and run to the nearest parent or older sibling for refuge and protection. Pets are very similar in nature, they need comfort and reassurance when dealing with loud noises, or things that frighten them. The night the disciples were on the Sea of Galilee and a storm sprung up, they tried everything they could and was about to give up, when they saw Jesus walking towards them on the water. Their deliverer and protector was on the scene and they had no need to worry any further, for they were under His ‘sheltering and protecting wing’. But as I meditated on this Scripture, I thought of the many and varied ‘storms’ of life that we battle with today. In times past, if one city or state was hurting, there would be an onslaught of helpers headed our way to help us through. One country would go to the defense of another to help them through a war, or through unusual circumstances. But in what might very well be the last days, we turn on our televisions to see that citizens of every tribe and nation are battling the same ‘storm’, or battle. The curse of Covid is affecting us all, with no respecter of person, nationality or religious belief. Isn’t it like we all need a place to shelter from the spread of this dreaded disease? As we lose family members and friends all around us, shouldn’t we all run to the only One who has all of life’s answers, and has the power and authority to cover us under His wing as He protects and just loves on us to comfort and cheer us up? Friends, for the Christian, we have an even deeper assurance, for we could say like Paul, it is pure joy to be absent from the body and present with the Lord. Also, for me to live is Christ personified here on earth, but to die is gain (the gain of eternal life with the Father and the Son, where there will be no more pain, disease, dying, heartaches, or parting from our loved ones. For the unbeliever whom God may place in the path of this devotional, may I introduce you to this Savior of mine that gives me this peace in the midst of our storms today? I would be overjoyed at the opportunity. Please email NuggetsFromGodsWord@Outlook.com and I will be quick to respond, God being my helper!

BLESSING(S) NOTED: I am reminded of that old hymn ‘For I’m sheltered safe in the Arms of God’! Praise God His children are sheltered safe under His wing through every ‘Storm’ of life.

PRAYER: What a sweet assurance to know that even in the midst of our storm, we could call on You, Jesus! Thank You for being that comfort and stay for our ancestor David, and I especially thank You Lord for being there for us today. We are in the middle of ‘storms’ for which mankind is stumped for a resolution, but praise God we know a man who can calm the storm, heal our bodies, rescue our souls, and take us safely to that beautiful home You have prepared for us in Heaven! Lord, I hurt for the souls of our family members who show no concern for their souls. Please Lord, use Your warriors here on earth like never before and allow us to be a witness to the power and goodness of our Lord. Oh that our loved ones will accept Your free gift of Eternal Life today! AMEN!

I Will Praise You Forever!

I can only imagine what our church services would be like if we went prepared to worship our Lord and Savior with the enthusiasm that David had developed, and with what he shared with us in our Scripture today! Often it takes a really nice band, an overly enthused director and a sweet blend of a praise team working together to eventually build up excitement in most churches, how about yours? As we meditate, let us consider what may have been different in David’s case.

SCRIPTURE FROM: Psalm 30:11-12
TRANSLATION: New Century Version (NCV)

BIBLE TEXT: 11 You changed my sorrow into dancing. You took away my clothes of sadness, and clothed me in happiness. 12 I will sing to you and not be silent. Lord, my God, I will praise you forever.

APPLICATION: I remember a time or two in my lifetime where I was committed to earnest prayer for very dire situations. Being blessed to come out successfully and favorably on the other side of that situation, I remember that it was a natural reaction to praise the Lord with all of my being. David had gone through some very similar situations, but he stuck to his plan in pleading before God about his concerns. In just the early part of Psalm 30, David was in such fear of his life, and unsure if God was really protecting him, until he questioned what good would it do God if he died. Often when we are in a hopeless mood and on an uncertain path, we start to feel sorry for ourselves. In fact, we may even start to feel like God has forsaken us. But I believe that God places us in the path of Scripture such as this one, where we are reminded that our problems have been very, very minor compared to those that David faced, yet he realized that the God of this whole universe noticed a little spec like himself and filled his heart with joy and amazing hope. Friends, this is the same God that we serve! Have you really face unsurmountable problems during the week, or have you just not seen your life unfold the way that you imagined, or wanted? What if you met a friend, like I did, who is a paraplegic, yet he encourages other men each week in their walk with the Lord? Do you suppose that you may then feel like your problems really were insignificant, and that God really has been faithful to you in many supernatural ways? God has been dealing with me about this daily devotional format recently, for He led me to think about adding a section to declare His blessings in each Scripture that we look at. You see, I have been focusing way too much on the areas of correction God may want us to carefully look at, and while this is very important, we must never overlook His blessings to us and the encouragement we receive from His word. So stay tuned for that enhancement!! As for today’s Scripture, please allow me to encourage each reader to look for the blessings of God each and every day – even those days when it seems like the bottom has fallen through for you. Praise God for those blessings each day, and be prepared to praise Him with the corporate body when you meet for weekend services. Remember, He is the God of the mountain, and the God of the valleys also. Never feel like He has left you hanging, for He may be giving you room to grow in your relationship with Him. Praise Him for each day, no matter how uplifted you feel, or how little you feel like you accomplished that day. Knowing that you’ve had Jesus by your side and leading the way for you, is enough to praise Him with all of your heart. In the words of David – praise Him forever!

PRAYER: I am reminded of an old hymn ‘Oh For A Thousand Tongues to Sing the glories of my King’, for You are so deserving of all my praise in every circumstance of life, dear God. I remember two distinct times where my family received calls about the death of loved ones. Very sad times, and it would have been extremely challenging to praise You Lord in those times. But in one of those cases, my dad gave his heart in full surrender to You, Lord, and there is no greater cause for praise than to know that a loved one was called from a world of darkness into the kingdom of light as a born again Christian! Please encourage us to not question You in Your infinite wisdom, for you not only know about today, but You are the Designer of our tomorrows also. Thank You for Your faithfulness Lord. We praise You in our storms, because we know that You are waiting our arrival on the other side. Help us to share our blessings with others so that they might want to know You in a personal and intimate way. Thank You Lord Jesus! AMEN!

Peace In The Storms of Life

Over recent months you may have faced situations where you were ready to throw your hands up and give in because of the challenges, losses, disappointments and hard times. But something, or rather someone, brought you through. Could it have been Jesus, who was awaiting your cry for help, like He did with the disciples in the boat? As you reflect on this Scripture with me, let’s be reminded that He still cares for us today, and tomorrow.

BIBLE REFERENCE: Matthew 8:23-26
TRANSLATION: The Passion Translation (TPT)

BIBLE TEXT: 23 They all got into a boat and began to cross over to the other side of the lake. And Jesus, exhausted, fell asleep24 Suddenly a violent storm[q] developed, with waves so high the boat was about to be swamped. Yet Jesus continued to sleep soundly. 25 The disciples woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We’re going to die!”[r]
26 But Jesus reprimanded them. “Why are you gripped with fear?[s] Where is your faith?” Then he stood up and rebuked[t] the storm and said, “Be still!” And instantly it became perfectly calm.[u]

OBSERVATION: Over recent months you may have faced situations where you were ready to throw your hands up and give in because of the challenges, losses, disappointments and hard times. But something, or rather someone, brought you through. Could it have been Jesus, who was awaiting your cry for help, like He did with the disciples in the boat? As you reflect on this Scripture with me, let’s be reminded that He still cares for us today, and tomorrow.

APPLICATION: Friends, we serve as faithful and loving God! When He knows that we have been pushed to a stage where we need our Father, our Savior, our Protector, our Deliverer, He will stick with us closer than a brother. He is waiting to show forth His awesome power, He can’t wait to show how much He loves us and that He would move mountains to show forth His love for His kids. Perhaps worry and doubt sometimes burden us, but in a recent sermon the pastor encouraged us in saying that ‘Faith is acting like God is telling the truth’. Think about it, we know that we serve a God who can do all things – There is Nothing that He can’t Do’. Listen carefully to the words of this popular Christian song, and be reminded of this (I included a link in the words underlined). We may have reached the end of our rope, just as the men in the boat thought that all hope was lost in their survival when the the bad storm developed. As a last resort the disciples awoke Jesus. I’m not sure why we leave these things until all hope is lost, before we call on Jesus. I’m sure He would love to see us do this as our very first option. Dear friends, if you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you and I have the greatest power available to us in our storms of life. He will never fail us, and He will quickly give us peace about the storm, and possibly even resolution for the storm that is causing us grief. Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross and know that you can have peace that will satisfy your troubled heart. In spite of all that has already taken place, we have no idea what tomorrow will bring. But let me remind you that the same God who calmed the rough waters of that lake for His disciples in today’s Scripture, He is still God and He is still all-powerful. Place you’re hand in His, knowing that He cares for you, and knowing that He will still care for His own.

PRAYER: To the God who created the seas, we are once again reminded that You still have the power to direct the actions of the waves and calm the oceans and lakes. Thank You Father that You care so much about us. I can hardly imagine the peace that must have swept over Your disciples when they realized that they had You so near, and that You had power of the very seas that threatened their lives. But Lord, we walk similar paths in that we have challenges facing us every day over which You have full control, and You are very much available to us as You were for the disciples. Please help us to seek Your face, worship You as Lord, be reminded of our awesome God, and then call on You for every aspect of life. Many things are beyond our reach and out of our control, but we serve a God who can do ALL things. There is nothing better than You, nothing more powerful than You, so help us to seek God first in all things, for He cares for us. AMEN!

Learn to Praise God, Even In The Storms of Life!

Even among his troubles David took time to recognize God and to offer up a sacrifice of praise right in the middle of his challenges. We face challenges all the time, so let’s see how this might help us….

SCRIPTURE

From:

Psalm 57:5 (CEV)

Text:

4 I live among lions, who gobble down people! They have spears and arrows instead of teeth, and they have sharp swords instead of tongues.
5 May you, my God, be honored above the heavens; may your glory be seen everywhere on earth.
6 Enemies set traps for my feet and struck me down. They dug a pit in my path, but fell in it themselves.
OBSERVATION:
Even among his troubles David took time to recognize God and to offer up a sacrifice of praise right in the middle of his challenges. We face challenges all the time, so let’s see how this might help us….
APPLICATION:
I want you to particularly notice that we are very much like David was, in that he suffered insecurities, and that he felt like his enemies were out to get him at every turn. In verse 4, some translations use the word ‘enemies’ in lieu of ‘lions’. In verse 6 David continues to emphasize how much his enemies are out to get him. Yet right in between these two verses, David stopped to give honor to God! I believe that we can conclude that David was sharing his heart with God about how he really felt in this world in verses 4 and 6, but he wanted God to know that in spite of his challenges and the way that he felt others were treating him, he wanted to praise God anyway. I believe that God placed these verses before me today for a special reason, for in verse 4 I could easily share about my concerns about hurricane Irma that is approaching us from the south, and there is so much concern about safety, security and survival because of the awesome strength that this hurricane brings and all of the tornados that will spawn from it. In verse 6 I can easily worry myself silly over what life my look like after this storm. But I believe that God wanted me to recognize that in the middle of all these worries, I need to stop and remember who’s in charge; who created us; who causes the winds to blow; and who will guide this storm and keep a watchful eye over his children. When I think about all of this and take a reality check on who also guides me through the storms of life every day, I am reminded that I serve a risen Savior who watches, protects and loves me, every day, so there is nothing to worry about! I want His will to be accomplished in and through my life every day, whether in the heat of the summer, or the coldest winter, or on the mildest day of summer enjoying the beauty of the beach or the mountains, or even through vicious storms, such as the approaching hurricane. Friends, let’s learn to praise our God in all phases of life – on the good days or the days that we feel could be better. Then when the storms come, we will look for the works of our Master and find reasons to praise Him even then. Of course I want you to be safe during the storms of life that will come your way, but let me also encourage you to always praise God in the good times and in the challenging times of life. Remember, He’s still God and He will watch over you in every circumstance of life!
PRAYER:
Lord, please help us to be more like David and praise you in the midst of the storms of life that seem gigantic to us. Oh to be reminded that You are creator over all things and watch over us on the good days and on those days that seem hopeless to us. We are but a spec of dirt in the overall master plan of this earth, but yet we serve a God who considers us heirs, and sons and daughters of His! What a mighty God we serve! Please help us to keep our head up; look to the Master of this universe for all things, and give thanks in all circumstances of life, AMEN!
