Scripture: Mark 12.

(Key verses)

Mark 12:29-31 (NLT)

29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD.

30 And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’

31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my life today?)

God’s laws are not burdensome. They can be reduced to two simple principles: Love God and love others. These commands are from the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18). When you love God completely and care for others as you care for yourself, then you have fulfilled the intent of the Ten Commandments and the other Old Testament laws. According to Jesus, these two commandments summarize all God’s laws. Let them rule your thoughts, decisions, and actions. When you are uncertain about what to do, ask yourself which course of action best demonstrates love for God and love for others. A lot is packed into these two commandments and it would appear on the surface that they are very easy to remember and follow. Let’s ask God today to help us be mindful of these two items as we concentrate on the people we come into contact with (our neighbor) and our thoughts, words and actions so that they may be an example of the One that we love, Jesus our Lord. The Word says that as we obey these two important commandments, we will find where all other commandments fall into place.

(What I will ask of God, in order for me to properly apply His Word to my life)

Jesus, thank You for providing a path for us to follow. Thank You for loving us enough to help us stay on the right path and do the right things. No one knows better than You how challenging it is to live life down here in full obedience to Your Word, and as an example of You, but throughout Your Word You have convinced us that there is no greater strength than to place our faith and our trust in You. Thank You for loving us that much. May I be true to Your Word today, is my humble prayer.
