A Personal Encounter With The Master

Of course you know how to pray for a crippled man, his needs are obvious, right? But do they always know what your needs are? Isn’t it sometimes a mystery to others where you are hurting, or what your deepest needs are? Don’t you wonder sometimes if they really care? I believe that we will be reminded today that Jesus truly cares about us, no matter how confused others may appear to be, or how much they ignore your needs. Stay tuned.

SCRIPTURE FROM: Mark 10:48-52
TRANSLATION: The Passion Translation (TPT)

BIBLE TEXT: 48 Those in the crowd were indignant and scolded him for making so much of a disturbance, but he kept shouting with all his might, “Son of David, have mercy on me now and heal me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they went to the blind man and said, “Have courage! Get up! Jesus is calling for you!” 50 So he threw off his beggars’ cloak, jumped up, and made his way to Jesus.
51 Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?”
The man replied, “My Master, please, let me see again!”
52 Jesus responded, “Your faith heals you. Go in peace, with your sight restored.” All at once, the man’s eyes opened and he could see again, and he began at once to follow Jesus, walking down the road with him.

APPLICATION: In another story, I found it especially fitting how Jesus gathered the children to Himself, despite the disciples trying their best to send them away. Now in our story today, to see how the disciples also tried to send the blind man away so that Jesus would not be bothered by his call for mercy and healing. What I appreciate most of all though, is to see how Jesus singled out this blind man to learn more about his needs. We must be reminded that Jesus knew all about this man and his personal needs, long before he every ordered him to be brought before Him. However, it is often good for us to verbalize exactly what is going on inside of us, especially to the Creator of the Universe. Imagine for a moment if Jesus had just ordered that sight be returned to this man and afterwards, He just ordered the disciples to have him go about his way. What might the blind man have gained spiritually about that kind of distant encounter? Can’t you see that Jesus wanted to have a personal encounter with this man? We tend to grow relationally when we have a personal encounter, don’t we? That’s why pastors and evangelists often encourage non believers to not only meet the Savior, but to have a personal relationship with Him. There’s more accountability one for another when this happens, and we are more convinced of the love someone has for us when they are willing to meet with us where we are, understand our very personal convictions and needs, and make an effort to hold our hand or help us through the mountains in our life. Jesus is just that kind of loving Savior, and One that we have good reason to seek after, accept and follow for the rest of our lives. After all, He created us and He has a perfect plan for our lives. However, He will not force Himself on anyone, so just like the blind man, Jesus wants us to express our desire to know Him, to have a relationship with Him, and He wants to meet our needs in ways that are way beyond anything we could imagine. Have you called out to Jesus yet my friend? You may not be blind, but your needs may be even greater than Bartimaeus in various ways. Jesus knows about your troubles, challenges and your deepest needs, but He wants to hear from you. Are you interested in a one-on-one relationship with the Master and willing to share your heart with Him? Imagine His hands outreached in much the same way as He may have been when He ordered the disciples to bring him to Me. Talk with Him right now dear friend, and be willing to move when He calls.

BLESSING(S) NOTED: Jesus is more interested in hearing about our needs than just healing from a distance. He wants a personal relationship with us as He meets with us and hears us acknowledge our shortcomings and our failures. With God, ALL things are possible!

PRAYER: Thank You Lord Jesus for wanting to know me, to reach out and touch me rather than meeting my needs from a distance. It is such a relief to admit our inadequacies and inabilities to a God who knows it all and can remedy our every weakness. Please Lord, touch the hearts of my readers and listeners today, as together we acknowledge our need of the King of all kings. Open our eyes Lord, we want to see Jesus. Please make our lives shine with the love and glory of Jesus that the lost will be drawn to the source of our strength, love and wisdom. AMEN!

It’s GOD!

I believe in these verses Paul intended to help the church to know the importance of drawing close to God so that He could draw close to them and use them for the enrichment of each other. This speaks volumes to the church today, because when we go off doing our own thing it might only benefit our small circle of friends, however when we allow the Holy Spirit to direct us into action and showing love one to another, we will see the church (God’s body of believers) enriched, blessed and uplifted. How do you feel like you’re doing in this, friends?

Bible Reference: 1 Corinthians 12:6-7
Translation: The Living Bible (TLB)

Bible Text: There are many ways in which God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work in and through all of us who are his. The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church.

OBSERVATION: I believe in these verses Paul intended to help the church to know the importance of drawing close to God so that He could draw close to them and use them for the enrichment of each other.

APPLICATION: If we were to sit down and evaluate how we are doing individually, I believe that Satan will automatically drive our thoughts possibly towards the pastor and what he could be doing differently, or more of the ministry he is being paid to do. Satan might also drive us towards all that we’ve heard about other leaders in the church, or even members that we’ve always looked up to. You know what I mean, it’s everyone else’s fault – except yours. Really, friends? Do we really believe that there are any here on earth that are perfect, like Jesus Christ was? Paul took a moment to express to the church that it is only because of the grace of God, and the power of God, working in and through us (the church) that anything could be accomplished for our God. Oh that we would never be so bold and/or stupid enough to study God’s Word, or teach His Word to others or preach His Word, without the full cooperation and help of the Holy Spirit. We are His instruments, and therefore He uses us to speak to His children, so that their hearts may be drawn to Jesus. That whole encounter is a ‘Jesus thing’ that we never want to mess up. Please join me as we read or study the Word, that we may carefully apply it to our lives. Sure, we may teach what we learn to others, but oh precious Savior, may You be faithful in helping us apply every word from God to our own lives first. My prayer for each reader today is that we all be found faithful and true, so that we may be used of God to spread the gospel in all walks of life, so that Jesus might tug on the hearts of all who hear, or are touched by us, and are touched by Him.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord Jesus for touching my heart, thank You for making me whole. Please give my believing readers and I, the boldness and determination to reach out to all those that we will come into contact with today, and as we merely brush up alongside these individuals, I pray that You will penetrate their hearts and draw them to Yourself. Oh that they will see Jesus today, and come to know Him personally and intimately as their Savior and Lord. Today may be the day that many will come to know You as Lord, but I also realize that today may be the day that You call many home to Yourself. May Your perfect will be done in each of our lives dear Lord, AMEN!

Answers To Your Search For God

It appears like through the writer of Hebrews, God may be saying to us that in spite of the many ways that we seek God, and in spite of the evidence often used to identify God’s presence and existence, yet we need look no further than His Son to understand who God is, where God is, and how badly God wants us to see clearly the path of salvation that leads His children to eternity with Him in glory. The big question for us today is ‘Do we know God’s Son’? ‘Have we met Jesus personally and have an intimate, personal relationship with Him’?

SCRIPTURE  FROM:   Hebrews 1:1-3 (TLB)

TEXT: Long ago God spoke in many different ways to our fathers through the prophets, in visions, dreams, and even face to face, telling them little by little about his plans. But now in these days he has spoken to us through his Son to whom he has given everything and through whom he made the world and everything there is. God’s Son shines out with God’s glory, and all that God’s Son is and does marks him as God. He regulates the universe by the mighty power of his command. He is the one who died to cleanse us and clear our record of all sin, and then sat down in highest honor beside the great God of heaven.

OBSERVATION:   It appears like through the writer of Hebrews, God may be saying to us that in spite of the many ways that we seek God, and in spite of the evidence often used to identify God’s presence and existence, yet we need look no further than His Son to understand who God is, where God is, and how badly God wants us to see clearly the path of salvation that leads His children to eternity with Him in glory. The big question for us today is ‘Do we know God’s Son’? ‘Have we met Jesus personally and have an intimate, personal relationship with Him’?

APPLICATION:   I find it interesting how doubt often develops about the existence of God when:

  • Our prayers are not answered the way we told God that we wanted them answered; or
  • We rush to call on God when we are especially going through desperate times, but we are met with silence; or
  • Those that we hold in high esteem, such as a pastor or other church leader, falls because of sin in their lives;

I’m sure that there are other scenarios that you may think of, but as you ponder over these things please also consider how your personal relationship is with God. For friends, although it may have been one of the above scenarios yesterday, Satan has an eye on you and I as he looks for a weak moment to bash in on our relationship with God. The good news is that God knew all about the temptations that would come our way, and all about the nature of sinful man, and yet He loved us anyway! In fact, He loved us more than we could ever imagine, for He went beyond anything we could ever imagine, by sending His only Son to live among us. Then to resolve the sin issue for us, God allowed Jesus to be crucified on a cruel cross at Calvary, so that through that one sacrifice, each of us that ask, in sincerity, to be saved from our sin, could do so by accepting the free gift of salvation offered through Jesus’ sacrifice. If you are still searching for God, then you are either ignoring the path set out before us through Jesus Christ, or you are calling God a liar and a fake. There is more evidence than we could begin to list, that our God is alive! The Word today shows us how God continues to work through His Son, Jesus, and how this was all orchestrated for one purpose, that we could have forgiveness of sin and a glorious home to which we could look forward to being with our Savior and our God! Do you know Jesus today, friend? Is this news not just exciting for you, but also very personal for you because you are already a son or daughter of the most high God?

PRAYER:   Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, and let me stand physically in Your presence on whatever day you decide to call me home. For my friends and I, You have prepared our eternal home; You’ve provided the means for us to get there; and You’ve given us Your Word so that we might know how to be right with You. Lord, may this be the day that You once again touch hardened hearts that we’ve been praying for, and may this also be the day that You reach in and convict the heart of the one who might stumble across this devotional in their search for everlasting peace and satisfaction. Thank You for loving us so much to not just leave us in our sin, but to open the doors of heaven for even us. AMEN!

A ‘Memorial’

THE HOLY BIBLE (The New Living Translation – Genesis 28:16-18): 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!” 17 But he was also afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!” 18 The next morning Jacob got up very early. He took the stone he had rested his head against, and he set it upright as a memorial pillar. Then he poured olive oil over it.

THOUGHTS: There are places today that bear as part of its name ‘Memorial’. Generally these are places named after someone important to the work that took place in or near that building, or perhaps the person who may have contributed financially to the construction of the building and/or memorial. I want to encourage you to read the chosen few verses again, especially with the thought of the ‘Memorial’ that Jacob erected. Now I want you to reflect on any memorial you may have erected either for yourself or for the benefit of others. I bet your next question is: “but why would I erect a ‘Memorial’ for myself?” Friends, I believe that when we have a special encounter with God, we want to always remember that. We will want to always revisit that place, reflect on the moment and pray that God might ‘do it again’! I believe that another reason for such a ‘Memorial’ is that it becomes a tool that you can use in battle against Satan. Think about the times that he has battled with you about your faith, or your relationship with God, or your prayer life, or your lack of praise to your heavenly Father. Don’t you know that you will put Satan in his place when you take him to the place, and tell him of the moment you spent with God and the awesomeness of the moment you spent at that very spot? Friends, Satan will look for every moment to questions you and cause you to doubt. Are you ready to go to battle? Unfortunately he will not settle for the ‘coined phrase’ that we give our kids “because I said so”. Satan will need to be shown that greater is He that is in us, than he that is in the world. Taken to the specific place and told of a specific time, will be convincing evidence that something occurred in our life. May I encourage you to be ready for the moment? Let nothing come between you and your heavenly Father. Memorialize the time and place where you encountered God – where He saved you; where He healed you; where He spoke wisdom to you about saving your marriage or your family. Put Satan in his place, and yes, also put God in His place in your life. Let it be evident in everything you say and do.

PRAYER: Father, this might be scary to the non-Christian who might be considering surrendering their life to You, because they will be aware that even to Christians deal with temptation and Satan’s tricks and distractions. But I pray that You will use these words to help give them a good footing to stand on, so that they can stand firm against the enemy. So many believers turn away from their commitment to You because of the ongoing battles with Satan. Please help us to stay ‘connected’ with You through prayer, Bible study, personal devotional time with You and fellowship with other believers – our support system. Please help us to not ‘brush off’ our times of encounter with the King of this universe, but help us build a memorial, much that Jacob did, as a landmark of our God encounter. Help us to not only praise You for these moments, but share these encounters with others so that they too might be encouraged to keep the faith. Friends and family that see Jesus in us, might be more apt to want to know our Jesus. May our hearts be so connected with You that we will always do a convincing job! I ask these things in the strong name of Jesus, my Lord, with thanksgiving, AMEN!
