SCRIPTURE

From:

Acts 4:7-10 (TLB)

Text:

…“By what power, or by whose authority have you done this?” the Council demanded.

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Honorable leaders and elders of our nation, if you mean the good deed done to the cripple, and how he was healed, 10 let me clearly state to you and to all the people of Israel that it was done in the name and power of Jesus from Nazareth, the Messiah, the man you crucified—but God raised back to life again. It is by his authority that this man stands here healed!

OBSERVATION:
After healing a crippled man, Peter and John were held captive by the Jewish leaders for questioning. Why, they were showing power that was yet unheard of, and the leaders wanted to avoid a coo that would distract the allegiance of the followers from their king to THE KING of kings and LORD of lords. They tried this through accountability and intimidation with Peter and John. To their surprise Peter was primed and ready, filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in the confidence of the Master that he served. This is a lesson for us all, stay tuned…..
APPLICATION:
It is easy for us to preach, or teach, or sing our praises, or pray beautiful and sanctimonious prayers – all around church and other Christians, but would we get slightly timid doing that in a public arena? How about when we know that the enemy, or opposition is present? Are we still ‘bold’ in our witness, speech or conduct? This Scripture tells us that Peter stood to speak, filled with the Holy Spirit. I believe this is the key to all of the scenarios I just prompted you to think of. You might respond that you have been filled with the Spirit from the day you were saved. To which I would challenge you to consider: What, then, holds you back from a bold public witness? Friends, I am convinced that what this means, is that Peter, a holy man of God, pleaded before the throne for grace to stand and speak boldly that day to anyone that might ask about the strength and power that resided inside of him. In response, the Holy Spirit anointed him with an extra unction of the Holy Spirit, to do the job, and speak the necessary words in support of Christ before leaders who refused to accept, or honor our Lord and Savior. Friends, did you realize that without that indwelling Holy Spirit in us, we too might look on the Peter’s and John’s of today and comment similarly to the Jews? For I believe that each of us must be so in-tuned with God that our spirit might mesh with the Holy Spirit’s presence and work around us, otherwise we tend to look at the individual and judge them based on what we know the capacity of individuals are. I believe that for God’s work to be accomplished in and through individuals and churches today, Christians must strive to be filled, and refilled with the Holy Spirit each day, for we will either be used of God to speak and work boldly into the lives of the unsaved, or we will affirm the work that the Holy Spirit is already doing in the lives of the unsaved through the humblest of men and women, even those that we would ordinarily brush aside as illiterate or uneducated. Let me encourage each of you reading this devotional today to speak with the Master about how He might use you – yes, even you, to speak truth into the lives of those that you come into contact with. Friends, it’s folk like us that the Almighty can use to reach other folk just like us! Let Him do that, won’t you?
PRAYER:
Lord, please have Your way in the lives of believers today, and please work mightily in preparing the hearts of individuals that we will come into contact with that need a touch from You. In our Scripture today, it was a lame man that needed help. Today only You know the spiritual condition of the hearts we will touch in some way. May it be a positive experience in which Your Holy Spirit might draw these ones to You, for this is my humble and desperate plea to You today. AMEN!

Thoughts on Listening To God

Post Date:

Thursday, 2017-06-22
SCRIPTURE

From:

Psalm 81:8 (NLT)

Text:

“Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings.
O Israel, if you would only listen to me!
OBSERVATION:
God had miraculously rescued Israel from their slave masters in Egypt and had taken care of their every need during their 40 long years in the wilderness as they traveled to the land of milk and honey that God promised to them. Yet right up to the very end of their journey they were still rebellious and obstinate about listening to God. Learning from the lessons of the Israelites, surely we have this obedience thing under control today, right? ….. we’ll see…..
APPLICATION:
Evidence of more obedient people today because we have learned from the lessons of the Israelites, might be: Children of God who are in the Book every day seeking direction from God; Christians who spend quality, quiet time with God in prayer at least once every day; Getting along with everyone because of being taught by God to follow His example; Churches filled to capacity as indicators of so many being filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit; Obedience to the Word of God and the Spirit of God causing others to see Jesus in every fiber of our being. Friends it is virtually impossible to accomplish any of these things under our own power, for to fight spiritual battles, we must surrender earthly things, and assume a right relationship with the God of this universe, the One who has all spiritual power, the One who guides us to do things that He commands, and say things ordained by Him. To be like God, we must spend more time with Him than we do with the leader of this world, Satan. God told us in vs 14-16 that if His people would humble themselves and pray and seek His face, then He would intervene and save them and bless them. In verse 8, let’s try removing the word Israel and replacing it with our name, or the name of our church, or our city or state or country. This is what it takes to replace the evil of our land with the good, the blessings and the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding. Are you willing to let it start with you and I? God never said that it would take an army to get His attention or His action, I am convinced that He would move mountains for just one or two, if that’s all that are prepared to follow His commands.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, You have proven Your love for us in so many ways, and I thank You again for that amazing love. You sacrificed the most dearest thing to Your Father, to prove Your love for us, yet we are so lackadaisical in commitment to You and in our walk for You. When troubles or challenges come, we try every idea thrown at us before we bow the knee in humility before You and seek Your face and Your miraculous touch. Please forgive us Lord, and as reminded in this Scripture today, please help us to listen carefully and follow Your perfect will for our lives so that we might honor You and allow You priority in our lives. I have every reason to believe that You will send opportunities to us today where someone will need to hear about Jesus, or feel Your sincere love, or be guided by Your all knowing and powerful hand. Fill us with so much of Yourself Lord, that we may be usable vessels for You in this world today, AMEN!

A Life Dominated By The Spirit of God

Friday, 2016-10-14

Scripture

Bible Reference: Romans 8:5–8

Bible Text:  5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

Bible Translation: New Living Translation (NLT)

My Take

Paul shared with his Roman friends/church, and I believe that God is challenging us today as we meditate on this scripture, to consider: who, or what is dominating our lives. First of all, our minds can only be controlled by the Spirit of God when we have surrendered our own sinful nature, and accepted the free gift of eternal life, made possible through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus assumes control of our minds and our lives when He is invited, and accepted, to become our Lord and Savior. When this occurs, the Holy Spirit assumes control and sets us on a path towards a life of peace and anticipation of our heavenly home. I believe that the scripture is clear in pointing out to us that if we are not enjoying that peace, and if we still feel hostile towards God, and if we find it impossible to obey God’s laws (His instructions from the Word of God), then we must pay close attention to those red flags, as we are still under the control of our old sinful nature that will never please God. Unfortunately, this life without God will never see the face of God, nor His heavenly home – heaven. So friends, may I encourage you to take a moment and talk with God about what is dominating your life right now? If you are confident that your thoughts and your actions imitate Jesus and His teachings, and that you are always seeking to serve Him more fully, then I believe that you can use this time to praise God for His saving grace and for placing His Holy Spirit prominently in your life to guide and direct you. However, in the very next verse (9), we are warned that if we cannot identify the Spirit of God evident in our lives – our thoughts, our words, our actions and our desires, then we do not belong to Jesus Christ. Fortunately, your pastor, your spouse, your friend nor myself can judge that and question you about your eternal destination. This is a matter strictly between you and our heavenly Father – God almighty. Because this impacts your daily walk in life, and your ultimate destination even after death here on this earth, I would strongly suggest that you go before God and evaluate your position with Him urgently. Why urgently? Because you have no assurance that you will have another opportunity to do so. There is a very old hymn that addresses the subject “Is your heart right with God?”. That’s my plea that I trust you will ponder today friend. Read my Footnote and click on the menu item above to read more scripture on the matter of “To know Jesus”. There’s no greater assignment for you today friend.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am reminded that if I am a child of an earthly monarch, then I will feel like, live like, and present myself to everyone that I meet, as a ‘prince’. My default lifestyle will imitate the sinful nature of this world in which I live. However, having accepted You as my Lord, and asked You to rule and reign in my life, then my words should sound like Yours, my actions should remind folk about Your actions while here on earth, and my thoughts should always reflect the hope, joy and love of Your sweet Holy Spirit that resides inside of me, and leads me throughout my day. My prayer is that You will not only touch my life miraculously with Your Holy Spirit every moment of every day, but Lord, may that be multiplied times over in the lives of those that may be touched by Your Word today. May the world see Jesus very much alive in Your children today, is my sincere prayer that I ask in the matchless name of Jesus, AMEN!

A More Fulfilled Life!

The Holy Bible

15 So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely. 16 Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times. 17 So do not be foolish but learn what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Do not be drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord. 20 Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(Bible Translation and Location: New Century Version – Ephesians 5:15-20)

Thoughts:

I believe that most of us would agree that our lives are more fulfilled when we feel good about something we have done, or when we receive compliments about something we have done. I don’t believe this is selfish pride, but rather, it helps us to know that our time here on earth has not been in vain. To achieve this fulfillment in the way God ordained, we are given some tips by Paul in these verses, for we are taught to:

  1. Be careful how we live – I believe this can also be interpreted to live your life intentionally. Don’t just let it happen. Think about it, we would never intentionally plan for failure. However, if we don’t plan for success, guess what will probably result? Based on all of the verses, I believe we are being taught to carefully plan our lives based on God’s will for our lives. So let’s constantly be in the Word so that we might carefully seek His perfect will;
  2. Do good at every opportunity – yes even amidst the darkness and evil around us. We are called to be children of Light, and to be that ‘light’ we must be totally opposite from the evil and darkness. With God’s help, we can be just that.
  3. Learn what God wants you to do – another Bible verse says that we are to ‘seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you’. When we just let life happen, we live by the influences of the world (Satan), so it is impossible for us to live any differently to the rest of the world. Let’s seek God daily and learn to wait on Him for what we should do, for His will is perfect!
  4. Be filled with the Spirit – When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He gives us the Comforter, His Holy Spirit, to live inside us. Each day we become stained with the effects of sin that is so prevalent everywhere we go, so let’s plead with God to refill us each day so that we might be ready to protect ourselves from the evil one. With God’s Holy Spirit active inside of us, and us being personally ready to listen to, and obey Him, we can face this world and overcome its evil desires;
  5. Replace gossip with praise and worship – This not only gives the world insight into who’s inside of us, but it also centers our lives on Jesus, instead of the ill that comes from gossiping about each other. This is a very positive change for us that will bless our heart!
  6. Always give thanks – not just at Thanksgiving, but daily look for things to give God praise and thanksgiving for. You may not be able to ignore the painful left arm, but you can praise Him with your right arm! Get the drift? Find things to praise God for, because things could always be worse, just look at those around you!

There was an old saying: ‘If it’s to be, it’s up to me’! With God’s help, we can make this old saying a reality friend! Commit to living a life filled with the Holy Spirit!

Prayer:

Lord, there is so much that we can whine and complain about, but there is so much more for the Christian who committed their life to You and who requests a ‘top-off’ of Your Holy Spirit each day, for greater is He that is in us than he who is in this world! You are my King, and I humbly ask that You fill, and refill me each day with Your awesome Holy Spirit so that I may have strength, boldness and confidence to be a child of Light to those around me who are so steeped in the darkness of sin and its master, Satan. I also plead that You might influence each reader today to commit in a similar way. We cannot live the life You intended for us to live, without You being in charge. May we be open to Your leading today, is my humble plea oh Lord, that I ask in Your precious and holy name, AMEN!
