Results of a Repentant Heart

Scripture: 2 Kings 22.

(What is God saying here?)

2 Kings 22:18-20 (NLT)

18 “But go to the king of Judah who sent you to seek the Lord and tell him: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the message you have just heard:

19 You were sorry and humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I said against this city and its people—that this land would be cursed and become desolate. You tore your clothing in despair and wept before me in repentance. And I have indeed heard you, says the Lord.

20 So I will not send the promised disaster until after you have died and been buried in peace. You will not see the disaster I am going to bring on this city.'” So they took her message back to the king.

(How Can I apply what God is saying here to my circumstances today?)

God was so upset with Israel because of the sin they committed, right from the king down to the people he led, and the total disregard they had developed for Him and disrespect for the temple of God; so much so that He was about to bring serious judgment on them. So far this could sound an awful lot like the world today. However in the era spoken of in this scripture, king Josiah had been such a great king and did so much to serve God through his leadership, that God acknowledged in these key verses that because of Josiah’s repentant heart and prayers, He would spare the land until after the king died. I know that sometimes we feel like our prayers hit a brick wall because we don’t see immediate results or answers, but this is a reminder that God is very aware of our commitment to Him, our dedication and sincere prayers to Him, and our desire for forgiveness not just for ourselves, but for those around us who could have been so different had we been the witnesses that we should have been. I believe that this is a reminder that our actions should not be a reflection of the answers that we witness, but we should be a people dedicated to serving God and obeying Him, not matter what. Let’s be busy about the work of God friends. He will hear our prayer and answer us in His timing. He holds the keys to eternal life!

(With God’s help, what am I going to do differently today because He said it?)

Father, I pray that I will not be weary in obedience to all that You command in Your Word. Please show me Your path daily, and please humble me to repentance as needed. You are God, and I am Your servant. May I always serve You well.
